Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA blank wkhtmltoimage image is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First determine whether the page itself rendered empty, its images or other resources failed, JavaScript had not populated it yet, or the output only looks blank because it is transparent or cropped. Then check the input type, logs, resource access, timing, and output settings in that order.
Start by identifying what “blank” means
Before changing flags, record the exact input, command, exit code, and output file. Open the image in more than one viewer or place it against a contrasting background: a transparent PNG can look like an empty white image in one viewer and become visible in another. Also check the image dimensions. A file that exists and opens is evidence that an output was written, but does not by itself show that the page rendered correctly.
- Entirely empty or white: the main document may not have loaded, or the visible page may genuinely be white.
- Background but no pictures: investigate image loading, local-file access, remote responses, and whether images were disabled.
- Some content missing: check stylesheets, fonts, scripts, and whether the capture happened before the page finished changing.
- Only part of the page: check output dimensions, screen width, and any crop settings.
- Looks empty only in a viewer: check transparency and the chosen format.
The project’s issue index includes a report titled “HTML page turns completely white/empty,” opened December 28, 2022, but the index does not establish its cause or a confirmed fix. The project index describes the repository as archived on January 2, 2023. Treat that report as evidence that users have reported the symptom, not proof that any one workaround fixes it.
Run once with visible diagnostics
Do not suppress output while diagnosing. Use an informational or warning log level and save to a named file so you can inspect both the process result and the artifact.

wkhtmltoimage --log-level info "https://example.com" shot.png
For a local HTML file, use its path as the input instead:
wkhtmltoimage --log-level info "/path/to/page.html" shot.png
Replace the example URL or path with the exact page that fails. Keep a copy of the command and note the installed wkhtmltoimage version and operating system. If the command reports an error, check whether shot.png nevertheless exists and opens. A nonzero exit status and a written image are not mutually exclusive: a 2019 report against version 0.12.5 describes a remote-image failure that produced output while returning ContentAccessDenied.
If the input is a local HTML file, check its assets and permissions
A local page can refer to images, CSS, fonts, or scripts using relative paths. Those paths may resolve differently from the directory you expect, or access may be restricted. The manual documents --disable-local-file-access and --allow; the settings reference describes this local-file access control. A 2019 report for version 0.12.5 describes a local image being blocked after local access was disabled.

- Open the HTML and inspect the resource URLs it references. Confirm that each local file exists and that relative paths are correct from the document’s location.
- Check whether your command or wrapper uses
--disable-local-file-access. If it does, determine which specific directories or files the page needs. - Use
--allowto permit only the required local path, rather than broadly exposing unrelated files. For example, add the option followed by the asset directory that must be readable:--allow /path/to/site-assets. - Run again with logs visible and verify whether the missing image, style, or script now loads.
Do not remove a local-access restriction without considering what other files the rendered document could then read. Limit permission to the assets needed for the capture.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf the input is a remote URL, investigate failed requests
A screenshot can be mostly complete even when one remote resource fails. Check the page’s redirects, authentication requirements, network or proxy access, and the response for each missing image or other asset. A server may deny a request that works in your ordinary browser session, particularly when the page depends on credentials or access rules. Inspect the log output and, where possible, test the resource URL directly from the same machine and environment as wkhtmltoimage.
Do not assume that an ignore-errors option makes every failed resource harmless or that the process exit code tells you whether an image file was created. In one version 0.12.5 report opened November 6, 2019, a remote image returned HTTP 403; the output was produced, but the process exited with ContentAccessDenied, even with ignore options. A separate report for that version describes error-handling behavior and differences between a named output path and standard output. These are reports tied to a specific version and environment, not a guarantee of identical behavior elsewhere.

If the page depends on JavaScript, wait for the content
Some pages show little or no useful content in their initial HTML and fill in the page with JavaScript. The manual documents --enable-javascript, --javascript-delay, and --window-status; the settings reference documents JavaScript enablement and a post-load delay.
- Confirm JavaScript has not been disabled by your command or configuration.
- Try a short, explicit delay after page load, then increase it only if the content is still appearing too late. For example:
wkhtmltoimage --enable-javascript --javascript-delay 2000 "https://example.com" shot.png. The two-second value is a diagnostic starting point, not a universal wait time. - If the page can expose a known completion state, use
--window-statuswith that status value, as supported by the page and renderer. This can be more meaningful than guessing a delay, but only if the page actually sets the expected status. - Compare the captured page with the same URL in a current browser. If it never reaches the expected state in
wkhtmltoimage, additional waiting alone may not solve the compatibility problem.
These controls can help diagnose timing, but they do not guarantee that every modern web application or framework will render correctly in this tool.

Check output format, transparency, width, and crop
When the output is not wholly empty, verify that the visible page was not excluded by capture settings. The documented controls include output format, screen width, crop controls, and transparency for PNG or SVG output. Check the command and any wrapper for an image-disabling option such as --no-images, and confirm that the chosen width and crop include the content you expect.

- Transparent output: inspect a PNG or SVG against a contrasting background. Transparency can make an image appear blank in a viewer that uses a similar background; it is a possibility to test, not a diagnosis without inspecting the file.
- Unexpected dimensions: inspect the image’s actual width and height, then compare them with your screen-width or crop settings.
- Missing pictures: check that images have not been disabled and then follow the local-asset or remote-request checks above.
- Wrong format: explicitly choose a format supported by your workflow and open the result with a viewer that supports it.
Change one setting at a time and recapture. If several options change together, it becomes difficult to tell which one affected the result.
Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Run the exact input with
--log-level infoor--log-level warn; keep the output path, complete command, exit code, version, and operating system. - Confirm that the output file exists, opens, and has plausible dimensions. Check transparency before calling it empty.
- For local input, verify asset paths and allow only necessary files or directories if local-file access is restricted.
- For remote input, inspect failed requests, HTTP responses, redirects, authentication, and network access.
- For script-generated content, verify JavaScript and test a suitable delay or a page-supported window-status condition.
- Review image enablement, crop, screen width, and output format. Compare with a current browser to establish whether the expected content is present there.
- If the cause remains unclear, reproduce with the same input and capture the exact tool build and OS. Historical reports cannot identify an environment-specific cause on their own.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a screenshot of a public web page rather than diagnose a local wkhtmltoimage installation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API returns an image or PDF. For example, using the supplied cURL pattern:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example target URL with the page you want to capture and provide your API key. The [API documentation](https://screenshotneo.com/docs/) covers request parameters; the cURL example follows the documented API endpoint and request pattern. Python and Node.js versions are also available:

When to stop changing flags
If the same page remains blank after resource access, request failures, timing, and output settings have been checked, compare the exact page and environment in a current browser and retain the minimal reproduction. The available issue reports do not establish one universal root cause, and the detailed 2019 examples concern version 0.12.5 on specific operating systems. Avoid treating a workaround reported for that combination as a general fix for every build.
