If wkhtmltoimage shows Hindi characters as empty boxes, first check whether the process running it can find a font that contains those Devanagari characters. If characters appear but vowel signs or conjuncts are misplaced, the problem may instead involve script shaping and layout. A font change is a useful diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: the cause depends on the renderer build, page, and runtime environment.
First identify what is actually failing
Boxes usually point to a missing glyph or a font the renderer cannot discover. Readable letters with incorrectly placed vowel signs, broken consonant clusters, or missing conjunct forms suggest a different problem: the renderer may not be laying out Devanagari correctly. These symptoms are clues, not a diagnosis by themselves.
Qt’s font documentation explains that Qt normally uses fontconfig to access system fonts and FreeType to produce font output. It also cautions that fonts usually do not contain every Unicode character. That describes relevant font-discovery and coverage concepts, but does not establish which Qt version or dependencies a particular wkhtmltoimage package uses. Test a small Hindi sample with the same renderer
Before changing fonts or the original site, determine whether the problem occurs in a minimal page too. Save a local HTML file with literal Unicode Hindi text, including vowel signs and a conjunct, then render it using the exact binary and runtime that fail on the original page. Compare the result with a current browser.

wkhtmltoimage hindi-test.html hindi-test.png- The sample has boxes: prioritize font discovery and character coverage in the renderer’s environment.
- Letters render but combinations look wrong: investigate layout or shaping behavior as well as the font.
- The sample works, but the remote page fails: compare the page’s CSS, loaded fonts, content, and runtime behavior. Do not assume the renderer’s font installation alone explains it.
This controlled test is a diagnostic recommendation, not a procedure confirmed by the historical issue report. Devanagari uses clusters, virama, conjunct forms, and combining vowel signs; a technical description of these requirements appears in the W3C Devanagari Layout Requirements Group Draft Note, dated 2024-07-09. It describes the script, not conformance by any particular wkhtmltoimage build. The document is a draft Group Note, not an endorsement by W3C or its members.
Check fonts in the renderer’s environment
Check the account, container, service, or job environment that launches wkhtmltoimage—not only the fonts visible in your desktop session. A font may be installed for one user but unavailable to a service running under another account. Confirm both that the renderer can discover the font and that it includes the Devanagari characters in your sample.

- Identify the exact
wkhtmltoimageexecutable and the user or service that runs it. - Check the fonts and fontconfig configuration available in that same environment.
- Verify the candidate font’s character coverage for the characters that render incorrectly.
- Rerun the local sample with the same binary and environment after any change.
Qt’s documentation also describes a fallback font database in an embedded Linux context when fontconfig is unavailable. That is useful context, not evidence that a given packaged renderer uses that fallback or the same Qt stack. Avoid treating a font installation as a universal remedy for an unidentified renderer or page.
Distinguish missing glyphs from layout problems
- Empty or replacement boxes: check whether a suitable font is discoverable and covers the required characters.
- Visible characters with broken combinations: check how the renderer handles Devanagari clusters and combining marks; simply adding another font may not address the issue.
- Only one remote site fails: compare its actual page and runtime with the local sample. Remote-page warnings, including failed image resources, do not by themselves establish the cause of a text-rendering problem.
Devanagari is not just a row of independent glyphs: consonants may form clusters, virama affects combinations, and vowel signs can combine with or move around consonants. The W3C description is useful for understanding those behaviors, but it does not certify that a legacy renderer implements them correctly.

What the documented wkhtmltoimage case establishes
A wkhtmltopdf project issue opened on 2020-08-09 reported Devanagari rendering trouble on some Indian newspaper sites through wkhtmltoimage/imgkit and identified Windows 10. The report includes URLs and rendering messages, including warnings about failed image resources, but does not provide a maintainer-confirmed universal diagnosis or resolution. The project repository was archived on 2023-01-02 and is read-only. See issue #4797.
That case supports treating the symptom as real, but it does not show that every box-rendering failure has the same cause or that a particular font fixes it. Compare your exact input page, renderer build, operating system, and font environment before settling on a workaround.

Troubleshooting checks
- The local test still shows boxes after a font change: verify the font is visible to the actual renderer process and includes the affected characters; confirm you are invoking the binary you think you are.
- Only vowel signs or conjuncts are malformed: treat this as a possible shaping/layout issue rather than assuming missing font coverage is the sole cause.
- The local test works but the website does not: investigate differences in the page, its CSS and fonts, and the remote rendering context; the original issue’s resource warnings do not prove a connection to its Devanagari symptoms.
- The result differs between machines or services: compare operating system, renderer build, launch account, and available font environment. A desktop result does not establish what a container or background service can access.
