Use a source image of at least 2560 × 1440 pixels for a Wix website background. Wix presents that as a high-resolution quality recommendation, not a mandatory canvas size for every section. Your page’s container, viewport shape, scaling mode and focal-point position determine which parts visitors actually see. A background that looks perfect on desktop can crop differently on a phone, so check both layouts and use Wix’s mobile crop or a separate mobile image when necessary.
Also compress images larger than 25 MB before uploading. Wix says large background files can slow loading and suggests static shapes or colored sections when performance matters more than photographic imagery.

These values come from Wix’s site-media optimization guidance. Wix does not publish one mandatory pixel dimension for every background location, so treat 2560 × 1440 as a practical starting point rather than a promise that cropping will disappear.
Why one background size cannot fit every Wix screen
A background fills a responsive area, not a fixed photograph frame. A desktop monitor may be wide and short, while a phone is narrow and tall. To cover each shape, the editor may enlarge the image beyond the visible edges or remove portions at the sides or top and bottom. The result changes with the section’s dimensions, the visitor’s viewport, the selected scale mode and the position on Wix’s alignment grid.

Because the support articles describe editor contexts separately, do not assume that a mode has identical behavior in every Wix editor or effect setting.
Choose the source image before opening the editor
Start with enough pixels
For a full-width hero or page background, begin with 2560 × 1440 pixels or larger. A larger source gives Wix more detail to work with when it scales the image for high-density displays. It does not mean you should upload an unnecessarily huge file: dimensions and compression are separate decisions, and a very large file can hurt loading performance.
Keep the important subject inside a safe area
Place a person, product, logo or other essential subject near the visual center, with breathing room around it. Responsive cropping can remove the outer edges. Do not put critical text or interface instructions into the bitmap unless you have tested every target layout; live Wix text remains editable and can reflow, while pixels in a background cannot.
Prepare a mobile composition
Make a second, tighter crop when the desktop composition cannot survive a narrow viewport. Wix lets you crop the mobile background and also lets you choose a separate image for mobile, as described in Image Backgrounds on Your Mobile Site. A portrait-oriented crop often keeps a face or product visible more reliably than forcing a wide desktop scene into a phone-shaped area.

Set up and check the background in Wix Editor
- Add or select the background. In Wix Editor, open the page or section’s background controls and choose an image. Wix also supports images supplied by Wix and Unsplash at no charge, plus purchasable Shutterstock imagery; the available source options are described in Adding an Image to Your Page Background.
- Choose a scaling mode. On desktop, Wix’s background guidance describes Fill as resizing the image to fit the screen while preserving proportions. On mobile, the documented choices include Fill, Fit, Tile and Stretch. Read the preview rather than choosing by name alone: the same label can be presented in a different editor context.
- Set the focal position. Use the positioning grid to anchor the important part of the image. If a face is being cut off, move the focal point toward that side and check the result at more than one browser width.
- Open the mobile editor. Switch to the mobile view and inspect the actual crop. Wix provides Crop & Edit or Crop & Extend controls for adjusting the mobile background, then lets you refine its settings.
- Choose a separate mobile file when needed. If repositioning cannot preserve the composition, select a dedicated mobile image instead of compromising the desktop version.
- Preview and publish-test. Check a wide desktop window, a laptop-sized window and at least one narrow phone width. Look for cropped subjects, unreadable overlaid text, awkward empty space and contrast problems behind navigation or buttons.
Wix’s mobile-background documentation notes that mobile screens have a different shape and size from desktop screens. That is why a desktop-only approval is not enough.
Scale modes and positioning: how to choose
Fill
Use Fill when the background must cover the entire area and edge cropping is acceptable. This is usually the practical choice for a photographic hero, but verify that the subject remains inside the visible crop on both desktop and mobile.
Fit
Use Fit when seeing the complete image matters more than eliminating empty space. Depending on the container, Wix may leave unused bands around the image. Check the surrounding background color so those bands look intentional.
Tile
Tile repeats a small image across the area. It can work for textures or patterns, but repetition is distracting for portraits, landscapes and branded artwork.

Stretch
Stretch changes the image to fill the available area and can distort people, circles or product packaging. Reserve it for artwork where geometric distortion is not noticeable.
Position
Position is often more important than the nominal dimensions. If the subject is near the left edge, anchor left; if it is centered, use the center point and leave enough margin for wider crops. Recheck after changing the section height because a different container shape changes the crop.
Compression, formats and loading speed
Compress any file over 25 MB before uploading; that is the threshold Wix calls out in its media guidance. Even below that limit, a background can be one of the largest assets on an initial page view. Wix recommends cropping or reducing oversized images for mobile and says uploaded images are automatically resized for optimization. Its performance guidance recommends AVIF rather than PNG unless transparency is required; follow that as a current Wix recommendation, not as a guarantee that every background will be delivered in one identical format or dimension.
When the visual is decorative rather than essential, a static color or simple shape avoids the download and decoding cost of a photographic background. You can also remove unused borders from the source image, export at the largest size your design actually needs, and avoid embedding a second copy of the same artwork in a foreground image.

A practical sizing workflow
- Export a clean source at 2560 × 1440 pixels or larger for a large desktop background.
- Keep the focal subject away from edges that are likely to be cropped.
- Compress files above 25 MB and consider a modern format such as AVIF when transparency is unnecessary.
- Upload the image and test the desktop scaling and position controls.
- Open Wix’s mobile editor, crop with Crop & Edit or Crop & Extend, and select a separate mobile file if the composition still fails.
- Preview several viewport widths and test the published page on a real phone.
- Replace a nonessential photo with a static shape or color when load speed is the priority.
Troubleshooting common background problems
The image looks blurry
Confirm that the source is at least 2560 × 1440 for a large background and that you did not enlarge a small original. Re-export from the original artwork instead of repeatedly resizing a compressed copy. A larger source cannot restore detail that was never present.
The subject disappears on mobile
Open the mobile editor and move the focal position. If the subject still falls outside the crop, use the mobile crop controls or assign a separate mobile image. Do not keep changing desktop dimensions to solve a phone-specific composition.
There are unexpected empty bands
Check whether Fit is preserving the complete image inside a differently shaped container. Try Fill if edge cropping is acceptable, or set a deliberate background color for the remaining space. Avoid Stretch when distortion would be visible.
The upload is rejected or the page loads slowly
Check the file size first and compress anything over 25 MB. Then inspect the image’s pixel dimensions and format. If the background is decorative, replace it with a static shape or color. Wix’s site-performance best practices provide additional optimization guidance.

The editor preview and a visitor’s view differ
Responsive layouts depend on the actual viewport and section geometry. Test the published URL at the same approximate width as the affected device, then adjust the mobile crop or focal point rather than judging only from one editor window.

Image sources and licensing choices in Wix
Wix’s background workflow can use images offered by Wix or Unsplash for free, or imagery purchased through Shutterstock. The availability of an image in the picker does not remove the need to follow any license or attribution terms shown for that asset. For original photography or commissioned artwork, retain the source file so you can create a separate mobile crop later without quality loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I design one background with text baked into the image?
You can, but responsive cropping may remove part of that text on another screen shape. Keep essential wording as live Wix text and treat any lettering inside the bitmap as decorative unless you have verified every target layout.
Does Wix require the same background file for desktop and mobile?
No. Wix’s mobile-background controls allow a mobile crop and a separate mobile image, so the two layouts can use different compositions when one source cannot work well in both.
Is the 2560 × 1440 recommendation a guarantee that an image will not be cropped?
No. It is a high-resolution quality recommendation. Cropping still depends on the container, viewport, scaling mode and focal position.
