Choose Wix if you want a website builder with hosting and site tools bundled together; choose HostGator if you specifically want to run WordPress on a hosting plan and are prepared to manage the site. They are not equivalent builder products: HostGator says its Website Builder is no longer offered to new signups, so this comparison is Wix versus HostGator-hosted WordPress, not Wix versus a currently available HostGator builder.
What is the difference between Wix and HostGator?
Wix is a hosted website-building platform: you create a site in its builder, and hosting is part of the service. HostGator is a hosting provider in this comparison. Its shared hosting and WordPress materials list one-click WordPress installation, so you use HostGator to host a WordPress site rather than to build it in a current HostGator editor. HostGator’s help notice says its Website Builder is no longer offered to new signups; existing customers are told their service is unchanged.
| Decision point | Wix | HostGator |
|---|---|---|
| What you are buying | A hosted builder and integrated site tools; Wix says all plans include hosting. | Hosting for WordPress and other supported applications; its shared-hosting materials list one-click WordPress installation. |
| How you build | Use Wix’s builder and features available on your selected plan. | Install and manage WordPress; HostGator’s own builder is not offered to new signups. |
| Who handles site management | Wix bundles hosting with its platform, reducing the need to select and maintain a separate WordPress installation. | You choose and manage the WordPress site, including checking backup arrangements. |
| Free or introductory entry | A free site is available, but it uses a Wix address and displays Wix ads. | Hosting promotions apply to the initial term and renew at regular rates. |
These are provider-described products and features, not results from independent performance tests. Neither provider’s plan label alone tells you whether it fits: compare the tools and allowances you need, as well as the work you are willing to do.

Does HostGator have a website builder?
Not for new signups, according to HostGator’s Website Builder help page. The notice says existing customers can continue using their service, but it should not be treated as a current alternative for someone choosing a new website platform. If you want HostGator, evaluate its hosting for WordPress instead.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Wix for an integrated builder workflow
Wix is the more direct fit if you want to make a site in a guided builder, keep hosting within the same platform, and use the business features offered by your selected plan. Check whether that plan includes what you need for marketing, payments, commerce, storage, and collaborators. A free site can help you begin, but a professional launch may require a paid plan to connect a custom domain and remove Wix ads.
Consider HostGator if you want WordPress
HostGator’s WordPress hosting is relevant if WordPress is your chosen platform and you are comfortable building and maintaining the site. Match the plan to the number of websites and storage you need, and establish how backups will work before buying. HostGator’s provider comparison says its WordPress hosting does not include weekly backups, so do not assume that regular backup protection is part of the hosting plan.

Make the choice by workload, not just features
- Pick the Wix route if you value a single hosted platform and prefer not to select and maintain a separate WordPress installation.
- Pick HostGator WordPress hosting if you specifically want WordPress and accept the added setup and ongoing management responsibilities.
- Do not choose HostGator expecting to sign up for its discontinued Website Builder.
How do Wix and HostGator plans compare?
Wix lists Free, Light, Core, Business, and Business Elite. It says all plans include hosting and customer care, while storage, marketing, collaborators, payments, and commerce features vary by plan. HostGator lists Hatchling, Baby, and Business on its shared-hosting page, and its WordPress comparison describes Baby, Business, and Pro allowances. These are not directly equivalent tiers: one is a builder platform and the other is hosting for a site you run on WordPress.

| Provider and plan group | Provider-listed details | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wix: Free, Light, Core, Business, Business Elite | Hosting is included; plan features differ for storage, marketing, collaborators, payments, and commerce. | Confirm the exact features and price for your location and subscription term on Wix’s plans page. |
| HostGator WordPress: Baby | 20 website allowance and 20 GB SSD storage. | Confirm current plan packaging and backup arrangements. |
| HostGator WordPress: Business | 50 website allowance and 50 GB SSD storage. | Confirm current plan packaging and backup arrangements. |
| HostGator WordPress: Pro | 100 website allowance and 100 GB SSD storage. | Confirm current plan packaging and backup arrangements. |
The HostGator allowances above are provider-listed specifications, not a performance comparison. Its WordPress feature comparison also lists one-click installation and Cloudflare CDN. Verify current details before purchase because plan composition can change.
What will Wix or HostGator cost after renewal?
There is no single reliable price for every reader: location, currency, plan, and subscription term matter. More importantly, introductory prices and recurring rates are different figures. Compare the full amount billed for the first term with the renewal amount for the same plan, geography, and duration.
Wix billing
Wix says its displayed annual-plan prices are for yearly subscriptions paid in full, and prices and currency vary by location. Plans renew automatically unless auto-renewal is disabled. Check the price and renewal terms shown for your account on the Wix plans page before subscribing.
Rank #4
HostGator billing
HostGator says its promotional hosting rates apply to the initial term and renew at regular rates. Its price chart explains that yearly and three-year periods are billed as the term total upfront; a monthly breakdown is a comparison aid, not necessarily a monthly payment. Check the live checkout for the selected term and its renewal price. The rates displayed on a public pricing page can change, so a promotion should not be treated as a guaranteed ongoing cost.
Are domain costs included?
A domain and a website plan are separate considerations. Wix says a site plan is needed to connect a custom domain, and that domain can be registered with Wix or another registrar. Wix describes domains and website plans as separate subscriptions. Its free-site upgrade information says free sites use an assigned Wix address in the format siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress and display Wix ads; upgrading enables a custom domain and removes ads.

HostGator advertises a free-domain promotion only for eligible hosting terms. The domain renews at regular rates after the initial year, so check eligibility and renewal pricing rather than assuming it is free indefinitely.
Quick Recap
What to verify before you commit
- Site requirements: List the number of sites, storage, commerce functions, payment tools, marketing features, and collaborators you need, then compare them with the selected plan.
- WordPress responsibilities: If choosing HostGator, decide how you will handle backups and ongoing site management.
- Full-term cost: Record the amount due now, the billing period, and the renewal rate; do not compare an introductory monthly equivalent with a recurring annual total.
- Domain and branding: Confirm whether a custom domain is included, separately charged, or conditional on a hosting term, and whether the free option carries platform branding.
- Current plan details: Recheck checkout and plan pages for your location because pricing and included features can change.
