Yes, the connection mode can affect keyboard performance—but “wireless” covers two different technologies. For latency-sensitive gaming, a dedicated 2.4 GHz USB receiver is generally a better wireless choice than Bluetooth. Wired USB is also a straightforward option. For everyday typing, the available evidence does not show that a wired keyboard always has a perceptible advantage. Compare the specific keyboard’s measured latency and specifications for each connection mode.
How wired, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth connections differ
A keyboard’s connection can be wired USB, wireless through a dedicated 2.4 GHz USB receiver, or Bluetooth. Some models support all three, but their behavior may differ by mode. RTINGS’ archived Keyboard Latency 1.2 methodology tests receiver-based wireless separately from Bluetooth, so treating every wireless keyboard as one performance category obscures an important distinction.
| Connection mode | What the evidence says | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB | RTINGS measures wired latency as a separate mode; the cited material does not establish a universal latency advantage over every wireless model. | A simple choice if you want a cable connection and do not want to manage keyboard charging. |
| 2.4 GHz USB receiver | RTINGS treats receiver wireless separately from Bluetooth and recommends using the receiver rather than Bluetooth for wireless gaming. | A sensible wireless mode to check for latency-sensitive play, if the keyboard supports it. |
| Bluetooth | The archived RTINGS methodology describes Bluetooth polling limitations, while Lenovo notes that behavior may vary by connection mode. | Useful for compatible devices and general work; check the keyboard’s Bluetooth-specific specifications before relying on it for latency-sensitive play. |
Which connection should you use for gaming?
If you choose a wireless keyboard for gaming, use its dedicated USB receiver when available. RTINGS’ archived methodology puts it plainly: “So, if you’re planning on gaming with a wireless keyboard, make sure to use its USB receiver rather than its Bluetooth connection.” That guidance distinguishes receiver mode from Bluetooth; it does not mean every receiver-based keyboard matches every wired keyboard.
Wired USB is also a straightforward option when avoiding a radio connection or charging is important. Whichever mode you use, the actual keyboard and its measured performance matter more than the broad label “wired” or “wireless.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does Bluetooth have more input lag?
Bluetooth can behave differently from a keyboard’s wired or 2.4 GHz modes, and its polling rate may be lower. RTINGS’ archived methodology describes Bluetooth polling as usually supporting 125 Hz, but that is a statement in that archived methodology—not a guaranteed limit for all current keyboards. Check the model’s Bluetooth-specific behavior rather than applying the figure universally.
Polling rate is how frequently input reports can be sent or polled; it is not the keyboard’s complete end-to-end response time. A polling-rate specification alone therefore cannot tell you exactly how long a key press takes to register, nor does it prove that a difference will be noticeable in every use case. The University of Valencia’s discussion of keyboards in response-time experiments addresses polling and timing variability.

How much does the difference matter for typing?
For ordinary typing and office work, the cited evidence does not establish a universal, perceptible performance advantage for wired keyboards. It also does not establish a threshold at which every user will notice a latency difference. Choose based on the particular model, your connection needs, and whether the convenience of Bluetooth or freedom from a cable matters more to you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two keyboards fairly
- Compare latency by mode. Look for measured results for wired USB, 2.4 GHz receiver, and Bluetooth separately; do not treat a keyboard’s best mode as a result for all its modes.
- Check polling or report rate by mode. A product may list different figures for wired, receiver, and Bluetooth connections. Treat these as specifications, not as a substitute for a measured latency result.
- Confirm the receiver and host compatibility. Check whether a USB receiver is included and whether your intended computer or device supports the connection you plan to use.
- Weigh the practical trade-offs. Wired use avoids charging but requires a cable; wireless avoids that cable, while charging and receiver management may matter. Battery life, interference, firmware, and receiver placement vary by model and setup, and the cited evidence does not quantify their effects across keyboards.
As one model-specific illustration, Tom’s Guide’s Epomaker RT100 Pro review, published August 13, 2026, reports 1,000 Hz polling in wired and 2.4 GHz modes and a lower rate over Bluetooth. Those figures describe that reviewed keyboard, not all keyboards; verify the current specifications for any model you are considering.
