For modern gaming mice, wired is not automatically faster. Many wireless models using a dedicated USB receiver match or sometimes outperform wired-only mice in latency tests. The important distinction is usually the connection mode and the specific mouse: a 2.4 GHz receiver is the relevant wireless option for gaming, while Bluetooth generally has higher click latency.
Does a wired gaming mouse have less input lag?
Not necessarily. RTINGS says many current wireless gaming mice with proprietary USB receivers now match or surpass wired models in latency performance. Its testing also finds that some wireless mice are on par with, or faster than, the highest-performing wired-only mice in sensor-latency tests. These results apply to tested models, not every wireless mouse.
“Input lag” can refer to different measurements. Click latency is the delay between pressing a button and the computer registering it. Sensor latency concerns how quickly the mouse reports movement. A result for one does not establish the other. RTINGS describes its click-latency methodology and evaluation criteria at its click-latency test page and its sensor-latency methodology at its sensor-latency test page.
RTINGS’ 2025 click-latency framework rates wired and USB-receiver results under 10 ms as “Good,” and Bluetooth results under 20 ms as “Good”; it also marks results above 15 ms as a noticeable difference within its own framework. These are RTINGS evaluation categories, not universal human-perception thresholds. Because the Bluetooth “Good” cutoff overlaps its noticeable-difference label, read the categories as test guidance rather than a single standardized pass/fail rule.

Which connection should you use for gaming?
| Connection | What to expect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB | A valid low-latency option. The cable can drag or feel restrictive, but that is a comfort and setup issue rather than proof of slower sensor performance. | Players who want to avoid charging or wireless setup. |
| Dedicated USB receiver, often 2.4 GHz | Modern proprietary receivers can deliver low latency comparable to wired mice in tested models. Results still depend on the particular mouse and receiver. | Players who want a cable-free setup without choosing Bluetooth for gaming. |
| Bluetooth | RTINGS generally measures higher click latency than with wired or proprietary USB-receiver modes. | Convenience, compatibility, or power-saving use; switch modes for gaming when the mouse offers a receiver or wired connection. |
RTINGS’ click-latency comparison and definitions are on its latency test page. A wireless mouse should not be judged by the word “wireless” alone: check that its gaming connection is a dedicated receiver, rather than assuming all wireless modes behave alike.
What does polling rate change?
Polling rate is how often a mouse reports its status to the computer. A higher rate shortens the interval between reports, but it is only one part of the overall input path and does not automatically make a player more accurate.

Razer’s technology page explains that 8,000 Hz can send up to eight times as many reports per second as 1,000 Hz. The corresponding polling intervals are 0.125 ms and 1 ms. Those figures describe time between reports, not total end-to-end game latency. See Razer’s polling-rate explanation.

Razer also publishes controlled-environment click-latency measurements on that page: 0.291 ms average for its HyperSpeed Wireless Gen 2 at 8,000 Hz, 0.461 ms for Gen 1 at 8,000 Hz, and 0.807 ms for non-Razer wireless at 8,000 Hz. Razer says its measurement runs from electrical click actuation to the frame received or reflected at the host and is accurate up to 1 μs. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not independent tests or a guarantee for other mice and setups.

The same Razer page reports 0.090 ms average for its wired 8,000 Hz setup and 0.549 ms for a best non-Razer wired 1,000 Hz setup. Since both polling rate and product implementation differ, those figures do not establish a controlled wired-versus-wireless advantage.
How to choose between wired and wireless
Compare the exact mouse and connection mode rather than choosing by cable type alone. Look for independent measurements of both click and sensor latency when available, then weigh the practical differences that matter to your setup.

- Fit and handling: consider shape, weight, build quality, and features alongside latency.
- Power routine: wireless models require charging or battery management; wired models do not.
- Desk setup: a cable may drag, while a receiver placed close to the mouse can improve the wireless setup.
For a cable-free competitive setup, choose a mouse with a dedicated low-latency USB receiver, check independent results for that specific model, and keep the receiver near the mouse. If you would rather avoid charging, wired remains a sensible choice; a bungee may help if cable drag bothers you.

- Use the gaming connection: select the mouse’s USB receiver or wired mode rather than Bluetooth when low latency is the priority.
- Set polling rate: use the maximum rate if your system and game remain stable. Razer recommends a high polling rate for lower latency, but the ideal setting depends on compatibility.
- Disable power-saving features: turn them off where the mouse software allows it, following the manufacturer’s settings and instructions.
- Position the receiver: place it close to the mouse; an extender can help bring it nearer if the computer’s ports are far away.
- Lower the rate if a game stutters: some older game engines may not handle very high polling rates well. If stutter appears, reduce the rate and check whether the specific game and system improve.
These setup suggestions reflect RTINGS’ guidance in its click-latency and sensor-latency testing information, along with Razer’s polling-rate guidance.
