If live chat is disabled on a scheduled YouTube broadcast made with Wirecast, check the event’s settings in YouTube Studio first. In the Live Control Room, open the event, choose Edit > Live Chat, make sure Enable live chat is on, and save. Wirecast sends and configures the broadcast; YouTube Studio controls the chat setting. If the switch is unavailable or chat remains disabled, check the event’s audience setting and any YouTube policy or channel restrictions.
First identify what is not working
“Chat is disabled” can describe different symptoms. Work out which one applies before changing settings:
- Viewers cannot see or use chat: check the Live Chat setting and any audience or policy restrictions in YouTube Studio.
- The event is not live or is not receiving video: check the event destination and broadcast output in Wirecast, then confirm the event status in Studio.
- The event is live, but the chat switch is missing or unavailable: check the audience setting, Studio notices, and channel status. A Wirecast video or audio setting will not override a YouTube restriction.
Turn on chat for the scheduled event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Select the scheduled broadcast that viewers are watching. Make sure you have the right event if you have more than one scheduled.
- Choose Edit, then open Live Chat.
- Turn on Enable live chat, if the option is available, and save the change.
- Check the event again as a viewer. YouTube says live chat can be turned on or off at any time, including after the event has started.
The chat control is in YouTube Studio, not Wirecast’s video or audio controls. If you enabled it but it still appears unavailable, continue with the checks below rather than repeatedly changing Wirecast output settings.

Check whether YouTube has disabled chat for the audience or stream
Made for Kids setting
If the event or channel audience is set as Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat. Chat replay and Super Chat are also disabled for this audience setting. Review the audience selection for the event in Studio; do not change it simply to restore chat if the content is actually intended for children.

Age-related safety restrictions
YouTube says chat may be disabled on streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult. If this applies, follow YouTube’s current safety guidance; changing the chat switch in Studio cannot override an applicable restriction.
Channel, policy, or copyright restrictions
YouTube lists policy and copyright restrictions among possible reasons a stream or channel may have limited features. Its live-streaming eligibility guidance also requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check Studio for notices about the event or account and follow any instructions or appeal route YouTube provides. These checks identify possible categories, not the status of a particular channel.

Check Wirecast only if the broadcast itself is not reaching the event
Wirecast’s YouTube integration is relevant to connecting the account, selecting or scheduling the destination event, and sending the broadcast. Those tasks are separate from enabling chat in Studio. If the scheduled event is missing, not live, or not receiving video, compare the selected event and output in Wirecast with the event shown in the Live Control Room.
- Confirm Wirecast is connected to the intended YouTube account.
- Confirm the intended scheduled event is selected as the destination.
- Check that Wirecast is configured to send output and that the event in Studio is the one receiving that output.
- If video reaches the correct event but chat is disabled, return to the Studio chat and restriction checks; a working video feed does not establish that chat is enabled.

If the switch is unavailable or changing it does not help
- Reopen the correct event in Studio and check its audience setting.
- Look for account or event notices in Studio that identify a policy, copyright, or live-streaming restriction.
- If YouTube indicates a restriction, follow the notice’s instructions or appeal route. Wirecast cannot remove a YouTube restriction.
- If the problem is that Wirecast cannot schedule or send the broadcast, use Telestream’s support center or its in-app support ticket workflow. For a chat-only restriction, start with YouTube Studio instead.
