Short answer: A Wirecast perpetual license lets you keep using the last version covered by your support after that support expires, but Telestream says you will no longer receive updates or access to its support team. A subscription can restore access to updates and email support, but the current subscription price and billing terms are not established by the vendor pages cited here—check Telestream’s live offer before comparing total costs. Neither license type guarantees a continuously live YouTube channel; uptime also depends on your connection, monitoring, recording checks and tested failover.
What changes when support on a perpetual license expires?
“Perpetual” describes the right to keep using the supported version; it does not mean perpetual updates or support. Telestream says owners whose support has expired may remain on their last supported version, but no longer receive Wirecast updates or access to the support team. Telestream also says purchasing a new subscription restores access to updates and email support. Its help page points to subscription FAQs for version 16.0, so confirm the current plan terms directly before buying or budgeting. Telestream Wirecast Help and FAQs
Perpetual license vs. subscription: what can you compare?
| Decision point | Perpetual license | Subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Using Wirecast after support expires | Telestream says you can stay on the last supported version. | Not stated in the cited vendor pages; verify the current terms. |
| Updates and support | After support expires, Telestream says updates and access to the support team stop. | Telestream says a new subscription restores access to updates and email support. |
| Current price and billing terms | Telestream’s comparison page displays Studio at $599 and Pro at $799; these are comparison-page prices, not a verified subscription comparison. | Current subscription price, billing cadence, renewal, refund and cancellation terms are not established here. Confirm at checkout. |
| Best fit to consider | You prefer to stay on a known version and can accept losing updates and team support when support expires. | You want access to updates and email support, subject to verifying the live plan’s terms and cost. |
Telestream’s comparison page displays Wirecast Studio at $599 and Wirecast Pro at $799. Treat those as the prices shown on that vendor page, accessed in 2026—not as confirmed subscription rates or a complete lifetime-cost comparison. Offers and terms can change. Telestream Wirecast Product Comparison
Telestream’s separate Support Matrix lists Insider Access at $119/year and Premium Access at $299/year for Wirecast Access Plans. It also says the first year of Insider Access was included with lifetime-license purchases and that Premium Access is included at no added cost for Wirecast Pro subscription customers during the subscription term. These figures and plan descriptions may reflect different plan eras; do not add them to a current subscription quote without confirming they apply to the offer you are considering. Choose Studio or Pro based on the production you actually need

Both also list multiple simultaneous video capture/live inputs, USB and capture-card inputs, recording to disk, and RTMP/SRT/RTP outputs. The page differentiates their production features: Studio lists two Rendezvous guests and no included virtual sets; Pro lists seven guests and three included virtual sets. Check the current comparison for the exact capabilities and compatibility relevant to your setup. Telestream Wirecast Product Comparison
Version maintenance can affect platform integrations: Telestream’s version history lists Wirecast 16.5.3, dated June 10, 2026, and records a YouTube-destination authentication fix in version 16.5.1. That history does not establish that any particular user will encounter the issue or that a specific license is required to avoid it. Telestream Wirecast Version History

Will Wirecast keep a YouTube stream live 24/7?
Wirecast is an encoder, not an uptime guarantee. A channel that must remain live continuously needs operational planning in addition to a license: reliable outbound capacity, monitoring, checks that recordings are being written, and a failover plan tested in advance. YouTube advises streamers to monitor stream quality and test failover. Its live-event guidance recommends setting up well ahead, previewing in Live Control Room, checking the stream on the channel/watch page and mobile, monitoring audio and video, confirming local archive files grow, and testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. It also advises stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. For a continuous channel, adapt those practices to planned transitions and your monitoring schedule rather than treating event instructions as a 24/7 runbook. YouTube Live Streaming Tips

Plan network capacity and failover together
YouTube’s network advice is to provide upload capacity for the primary stream plus the backup stream, with 20% additional headroom. It warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. This is not a universal bitrate setting: required capacity depends on your stream configuration. A license choice cannot substitute for enough upload bandwidth or a tested backup path. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but that is not a requirement for every always-on channel. YouTube Streaming Tips

Check channel eligibility separately
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days to livestream; its guidance also states that users must be at least 16. These platform eligibility requirements are separate from Wirecast licensing. Check the channel and current YouTube rules before planning a launch. A practical decision checklist
- Confirm the license terms: Ask Telestream or review its live checkout for subscription price, billing cadence, renewal, cancellation and refund terms; do not infer these from the perpetual-license page or comparison-page prices.
- Price the period you expect to operate: Compare the actual current offer against the value you place on updates and email support, not just the initial perpetual-license price.
- Match features to the channel: Decide whether your production needs Studio’s listed guest capacity or Pro’s additional Rendezvous guests and included virtual sets.
- Assess version risk: If you keep using a version after support ends, account for having no further updates or team support under Telestream’s stated policy.
- Budget for continuity operations: Plan bandwidth for the primary and backup streams plus the recommended headroom; assign monitoring and archive checks; test failover.
- Verify the platform side: Confirm YouTube eligibility and test the complete encoder-to-channel workflow before relying on it continuously.
Common problems and what to check
You expected a perpetual license to include ongoing updates
Telestream distinguishes continued use of the last supported version from update and support access after support expires. Check your license and support status; if ongoing updates and email support matter, verify the subscription offer and its terms with Telestream.

The YouTube destination will not authenticate
Check that the encoder version and YouTube destination configuration are current, then review Telestream’s version history and support information. The history documents a YouTube-destination authentication fix in Wirecast 16.5.1, but that does not establish the cause of a new authentication problem. Telestream Wirecast Version History
The stream drops or the backup does not take over
Check available upload capacity against the primary stream, backup stream and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Inspect the network path, verify that the backup encoder is ready, and test failover deliberately rather than assuming it will work. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
