What a local OBS setup requires
OBS is the no-charge, open-source software route, but the channel operator remains responsible for keeping the production chain alive. Treat the computer as a dedicated streaming machine: prevent sleep, keep it powered, use a stable wired connection where practical, and arrange a way to check stream health and recover after a crash or network outage. YouTube’s listing of OBS does not promise 24/7 continuity.

YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Complete that step before scheduling the bhajan stream.
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Retrieve the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it, and replace it if exposed.
- Configure OBS as the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Select the intended video source or playlist workflow and confirm that audio is present and levels are not clipping.
- Match output settings to the source and connection. Use a resolution and frame rate the machine and upstream connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for its recommended bitrate and keyframe settings for the chosen format; the sources here do not establish a single bitrate or keyframe value suitable for every resolution and frame rate.
- Test privately or unlisted before the public schedule. Start the encoder, check YouTube stream health and audio/video playback, then confirm the stream appears as expected to a viewer. Do not rely on a playlist until the full loop and transitions have been checked.
- Plan for monitoring and failure recovery. A local setup can stop when the computer, power, or connection fails. Decide who will notice, restart OBS, and verify that YouTube is receiving the feed again.
For an India-specific network reference, the National Informatics Centre specifies dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream for its agency-feed webcast scenario, along with outbound RTMP port 1935 access and an encoder configured for the required protocol. This is NIC guidance for that service context, not YouTube’s bitrate recommendation and not a universal bandwidth target for a channel. NIC also lists an advance payment of ₹10,000 for its one-day webcast service; that is a NIC service charge, not the cost of a YouTube channel or encoder software. Clear rights for each recording and visual
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and rights-holder settings can interrupt or terminate a stream. Before putting a bhajan playlist on air, confirm that you have permission for the specific sound recording and composition, as well as any included images or video. Do not rely on a long stream being archived automatically
YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” It does not establish automatic archiving for a continuous stream longer than 12 hours. If recordings or replay access matter, arrange and verify a separate recording and archive workflow rather than assuming a 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay.
Estimate the full cost, not just the software price
A home setup’s cost can include the computer or encoder, electricity, bandwidth, and the attention required to monitor and restore it. Troubleshoot common continuity problems
- YouTube says the stream key or connection is invalid: retrieve the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room and re-enter them in the encoder. Keep the key private.
- The encoder is live but viewers hear no bhajan audio: check the selected audio source, OBS mixer levels, and the actual stream playback in YouTube before returning to the scheduled playlist.
- Video stutters or stream health degrades: reduce output demands to a level the encoder and connection can sustain, check the local upstream connection if using OBS, and compare the chosen resolution/frame rate against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- A local stream stops unexpectedly: inspect computer power and sleep settings, internet connectivity, and OBS status; restart the encoder and verify YouTube receives the feed. A local setup needs a monitoring and recovery plan.
- A live stream is interrupted for a copyright issue: review the affected recording and visual rights, remove or replace disputed material, and resolve the rights issue before restarting the playlist.
- A complete replay is missing after a long broadcast: do not assume a stream exceeding YouTube’s stated under-12-hour auto-archive window will be archived; use a separate recording workflow.
