WineHQ released stable Wine 5.0 on January 21, 2020, highlighting built-in modules in PE format, multi-monitor support, a reimplementation of XAudio2, and Vulkan 1.1 support. The project described it as the result of a year of development and more than 7,400 individual changes. These are the changes in that historical release—not a statement about the current Wine version or a guarantee that a particular Windows program will work.
What’s new in Wine 5.0?
If you searched for “Wine 5.0 released what’s new,” the short answer is that WineHQ’s January 2020 release announcement emphasized four areas: PE-format built-in modules, support for multiple monitors, an updated XAudio2 implementation, and Vulkan 1.1 support. WineHQ’s release notes also describe changes to Direct3D and graphics behavior.
Wine is a compatibility layer that lets some Windows applications run on other operating systems. A release’s feature list describes changes to Wine itself; it does not establish that every application, game, graphics driver, or computer configuration will work.

The four headline changes
Built-in modules in PE format
WineHQ said most modules were built in Portable Executable (PE) format instead of ELF when the MinGW compiler was available. PE is the executable format used by Windows, while ELF is common on Unix-like systems. The conversion was incomplete in Wine 5.0: WineHQ noted that not all modules had been converted and that work would continue through the 5.x development series.
Multi-monitor support
The release notes describe support for multiple display adapters and monitors, including dynamic configuration changes. This concerns Wine’s handling of display setups; it is not a promise that every application will correctly use multiple screens or react smoothly when a display configuration changes.

An XAudio2 reimplementation
Wine 5.0 included a reimplementation of XAudio2, a Windows audio API. The release announcement presents this as an audio-system change, not a claim that it fixes sound in every game or application.
Vulkan 1.1 support
WineHQ listed Vulkan support up to specification version 1.1.126 for the Wine 5.0 Vulkan driver. That version number identifies the specification level noted for the driver; it is not a performance rating or a guarantee that a particular graphics setup can use Vulkan through Wine.

Graphics and Direct3D changes
WineHQ’s release notes include more specific graphics and Direct3D improvements alongside the headline multi-monitor and Vulkan changes:
- DXGI applications gained standard Alt+Enter switching between fullscreen and windowed modes.
- For Direct3D 12 applications, the notes list fullscreen switching, display-mode changes, scaled presents, and swap intervals.
- The graphics work also covered multiple display adapters and monitors with dynamic configuration changes.
These are capabilities described in the release notes, not evidence that all DXGI or Direct3D 12 programs support them equally well. Application behavior still depends on the program and the surrounding system.

Other improvements noted in the release
WineHQ also called out improved WindowsCodecs bitmap-format conversion and additional handling for Direct3D edge cases. Those details sit alongside the larger architectural, display, audio, and graphics changes; they should be read as release-note items rather than broad compatibility guarantees.

That makes Wine 5.0 a substantial historical milestone, but its release notes are not current compatibility guidance. They do not establish which Wine version is current today, whether a particular program works, or how it will perform on a given computer. For an application-specific decision, look for compatibility information tied to the exact program and Wine version you intend to use.
