There is no universal winner: choose the operating system that supports the applications, games, hardware, and AI runtime you actually use. Windows offers a defined baseline and documented AI paths; Linux can be a valid choice too, but support depends on the particular distribution and software stack. This is a workload-based comparison, not a report of a six-month personal test or benchmark.
What matters more than an OS-wide verdict?
Compare the same real tasks on both systems. A game that runs well on one setup does not prove that every game will, and a local-AI runtime’s support for one GPU does not establish support for every model or application. Make a list of your must-have programs, games, peripherals, development tools, and AI workflows, then check their support for the exact OS and hardware you plan to use.
- Compatibility: Can you install and use the applications, launchers, drivers, peripherals, and tools you need?
- Maintenance: How comfortable are you with installation, updates, driver changes, troubleshooting, backups, and recovery?
- Gaming: Does each specific title launch, work with its launcher and anti-cheat requirements, and support the graphics features you want?
- Local AI: Does the application support your OS, GPU or NPU, model format, memory capacity, and chosen inference backend?
- One-PC constraints: Must the same machine handle work, gaming, and AI, or can you separate those needs?
These questions are more useful than a blanket claim that one OS is faster or easier. The official material cited here does not establish a controlled, same-hardware Windows-versus-Linux gaming benchmark or a cross-OS local-inference benchmark.

Will your PC meet Windows 11’s requirements?
Microsoft lists these minimum Windows 11 requirements: a 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores that matches its approved-CPU list; 4 GB RAM; 64 GB storage; UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability; TPM 2.0; DirectX 12-or-later compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver; and a qualifying 720p display. Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro require internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial setup.

Those are minimum eligibility requirements, not a recommendation for a gaming and local-AI workstation. The listed 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage should not be mistaken for a guarantee that demanding games, development tools, or model files will fit or run well. Check the requirements of each application and plan for its actual storage and memory needs.
Should you switch from Windows to Linux for gaming?
Start with your own game list, not the OS popularity figures. Check each title’s current compatibility, launcher, anti-cheat constraints, graphics API, and required features for the specific distribution and setup you would use. Then test the outcomes that matter to you: launch success, stability, frame pacing, and feature support. A title’s compatibility does not prove its performance, and an OS-level survey cannot answer whether your specific games work.
Valve’s optional, anonymous Steam Hardware & Software Survey for September 2026 lists Windows at 95.03% and Linux at 3.05% of surveyed Steam users; Windows 11 64-bit is listed at 71.34%. The Linux share includes users of multiple distributions. These are figures about survey respondents, not all PC users, and they measure neither game compatibility nor performance.

Windows Automatic Super Resolution is one feature with a narrow scope, not a general measure of gaming superiority. Microsoft says Auto SR requires Windows 11 24H2 or later, updated drivers, an eligible device category, and supported game circumstances. Eligible categories named by Microsoft are specified Snapdragon X/X2 Copilot+ PCs, Intel Core Ultra Series 3 Copilot+ PCs, or ROG Xbox Ally X under stated conditions. Microsoft also says Vulkan, OpenGL, and DirectX 9 runtimes are unsupported by Auto SR. Those limitations describe Auto SR only; they do not determine whether other upscaling technologies or games work.
Can you run local AI models on Windows and Linux?
Both operating systems appear in the local-AI options documented by Microsoft and NVIDIA, but the useful comparison is between specific applications and hardware paths—not an OS stereotype. Before choosing, confirm the model format, inference app, execution provider, GPU or NPU support, available VRAM or unified memory, system RAM, and storage footprint for your exact setup.
Windows: documented execution paths
Microsoft says Foundry Local selects available execution hardware at startup. Its documented paths include a Qualcomm NPU through QNN, a DirectX 12-capable GPU through WinML/DirectML, an NVIDIA GPU through CUDA, or CPU fallback. The app requests a model by alias, and the service selects a hardware-optimized variant.

Microsoft describes Windows ML as a way for apps to use a shared ONNX Runtime and download vendor-specific execution providers. It describes DirectML as a GPU acceleration API built on Direct3D 12 for DirectX 12-capable GPUs from AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm. The Windows-specific foundry-local-sdk-winml package uses Windows ML acceleration; Microsoft distinguishes it from a cross-platform SDK package without that acceleration. These are implementation details for particular apps, not a universal ranking of operating systems.

Microsoft states, “Foundry Local runs entirely on-device.” That claim applies to Foundry Local inference input and output; the same documentation says initial model downloads and optional catalog refreshes involve network activity. Do not extend that statement to unrelated AI apps or Windows services.

Linux and Windows: Workbench and hardware guidance
NVIDIA AI Workbench’s support matrix lists full local installation on Windows 11 build 22631 or later and Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04. For Workbench, NVIDIA lists 16 GB of system RAM as the minimum and 32 GB as recommended. Its storage overhead depends on the operating system and container runtime: the Windows examples include virtualization/runtime and container overhead, while the Ubuntu examples describe containers stored directly on the filesystem with native container runtimes. These figures concern Workbench’s installation examples, not every local-AI application.
NVIDIA’s current local-AI overview lists GeForce RTX for developing and testing smaller AI models on Linux or Windows, with a 6–32 GB VRAM category range. That is vendor guidance, not a guarantee that a particular model, quantization, context length, or application will fit. NVIDIA advises: “Choose hardware based on operating system, available GPU or unified memory, model size, and workflow.” Treat that as a hardware-selection principle, not independent benchmark evidence.
What changes if you dual-boot?
Dual-booting can let one PC run both operating systems, but it does not remove the need to verify application and hardware support in each environment. It also means planning storage and recovery before installation. Windows’ published 64 GB minimum is an eligibility figure, not a useful estimate for a library of games or local models; the material here does not establish a recommended drive capacity for those files.

- Decide where each OS, game library, project, and model file will live, accounting for their actual sizes.
- Back up important files and make sure you understand how to recover your system if installation or updates cause a problem.
- Record which OS and software versions you use for each workload so that a compatibility issue can be reproduced and diagnosed.
How can you make a fair six-month comparison?
If you want to decide by experience rather than assumptions, track the same workload on both systems over the period. Do not treat a checklist as a test result until you have actually run it. Keep the hardware and task as comparable as possible, and write down relevant version details whenever you record an outcome.
- List your must-haves. Name the work applications, development tools, peripherals, games, launchers, and AI workflows you rely on.
- Document the setup. Record the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, driver versions, OS build, Linux distribution and kernel, and the relevant game and AI software versions.
- Test real tasks. For each game, note whether it launches, its anti-cheat or launcher behavior, graphics API, feature support, stability, and any performance measurements. For each AI task, record the model format, runtime, backend, memory use, and whether inference completes.
- Track maintenance. Log setup time, updates, driver changes, troubleshooting, backups, and recovery work rather than relying on a general impression of which OS is easier.
- Review the results against your priorities. A problem with a required application may matter more than success with several optional tasks; weight each outcome by how often you need it.
If you publish performance numbers from your own comparison, disclose the hardware, OS and driver versions, game or model, settings, measurement method, and test dates. Without those conditions, a number cannot be interpreted as a meaningful Windows-versus-Linux result.
