For a 24/7 YouTube loop, estimate a Windows VPS’s monthly outbound data from the stream’s encoder bitrate: at a steady 1 Mbps, expect about 10.8 decimal GB per day or 324 decimal GB in a 30-day month. A 6 Mbps stream works out to about 1.944 decimal TB per 30 days; 10 Mbps works out to about 3.24 decimal TB. These are arithmetic estimates, not provider guarantees: leave room for overhead, reconnects, other server traffic, and the provider’s accounting method.
What bandwidth and data transfer mean for a VPS stream
Two different limits matter when you stream a prerecorded loop from a Windows VPS:
- Throughput is the rate the server can send data at a given moment, often described as a port speed or VM egress limit. Your stream needs enough sustained outbound capacity for its bitrate, with room for variation and other traffic.
- Transfer allowance is the volume of data the plan lets you send during a billing period. It may be measured per instance or pooled, and providers may bill, throttle, suspend, or require an upgrade when you reach a limit.
A large port-speed figure does not mean the plan includes unlimited monthly transfer. Likewise, a large transfer allowance does not establish that a particular Windows VM can sustain the rate you need. Check both for the exact product, region, and billing terms.
Estimate monthly data from the stream bitrate
For a steady stream, the calculation is bitrate multiplied by time. Since there are 8 bits in a byte, 1 megabit per second sends approximately 10.8 decimal GB per day: 1 Mbps × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000 ≈ 10.8 GB. Over 30 days, that is about 324 decimal GB.

These are calculated estimates for uninterrupted streaming at the stated bitrate, not published statistics or a prediction of a provider’s bill. They exclude other server traffic and do not add transport overhead or reconnects. Treat the estimate as a baseline and choose an allowance with headroom.
Pay attention to units. The table uses decimal GB and TB (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). A plan that quotes binary GiB or TiB will show a different numeric amount for the same number of bytes; do not compare GB and GiB as if they were identical.

Choose the bitrate for the stream you will actually send
The transfer estimate depends on the encoder’s outgoing bitrate, not just the video’s resolution. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 settings of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not mandatory settings for every loop; a lower bitrate means less transfer but can affect visual quality.
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), testing the upload bitrate and stream behavior before going live, and monitoring stream health. For standard RTMP/RTMPS streaming, it recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP. Once you have selected an encoder bitrate, use that bitrate in the transfer estimate. A recommendation does not mean every loop must use that rate: choose based on your source video, desired output quality, and what the VPS can sustain.
What the VPS transfer estimate includes—and excludes
In a standard YouTube live-ingest setup, the VPS sends the encoded stream to YouTube, and YouTube transcodes the live stream for viewers. Estimate the VPS’s upload volume from the outgoing ingest bitrate; do not multiply it by the number of viewers. This does not cover separate restreaming, local monitoring, or unrelated server traffic.

Also account for practical variability: network and transport overhead, reconnects, and any other workloads sharing the server or transfer pool. Provider measurement conventions can differ, so an estimate based on bitrate cannot guarantee the amount a host will count.

- Sustained outbound capacity: Does the advertised port or VM egress limit comfortably support the chosen bitrate and other traffic?
- Included monthly transfer: Is the allowance outbound-only or total traffic? Is it per VM or pooled, and does the period follow a calendar month or the plan’s billing cycle?
- Limit behavior and cost: Does the provider bill for overage, throttle, suspend service, or require a plan change when the limit is reached?
- Windows support and licensing: Is a Windows image available, and is its license included in the quoted price? Windows licensing charges are not comparable without checking each provider’s current terms.
- Compute and recovery: Can the instance encode your chosen resolution and frame rate, remain online for the intended runtime, and recover acceptably from an interruption? A plan’s network allowance alone does not guarantee CPU capacity or stream reliability.
Provider policies are product-specific. For example, DigitalOcean documents included outbound transfer, free inbound transfer, and outbound overage billing for Droplets; that is not a universal VPS rule. Azure describes VM bandwidth allocation in terms of outbound traffic and distinguishes it from inbound traffic; those details do not establish another host’s Windows VPS policy. Check the current terms for the exact SKU and region you intend to use.
Do-it-yourself VPS or a cloud streaming service?
A Windows VPS gives you a rented server to configure and maintain. You remain responsible for selecting the right transfer allowance and sustained egress, setting up the playback or encoder workflow, and checking how interruptions are handled. There is no universally best VPS plan established by the available provider examples, so compare the exact Windows offerings against the checklist above rather than choosing by port speed alone.
