The best VPN for Windows depends on what matters most: a simple app, more privacy controls, a no-cost option, speed, or customization. Current guides disagree on an overall winner: Top10VPN names ExpressVPN its top Windows pick, while The Independent chooses NordVPN. Proton VPN Free is a notable free alternative in both guides, though free plans come with practical limits.
What a VPN does on a Windows PC
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a provider’s server, which replaces the IP address websites see with the server’s apparent IP. It can conceal your home IP from sites and protect traffic inside the VPN tunnel, but it does not make you anonymous or prevent all tracking. Accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints, and activity outside the tunnel can still identify or follow you. Tom’s Guide also distinguishes Windows’ built-in VPN connection feature from a consumer VPN subscription: Windows can connect to a VPN network, while a provider supplies the service and server network.

Why Windows VPN rankings differ
ExpressVPN: simplicity-oriented pick
Top10VPN ranks ExpressVPN first of 59 providers in its Windows PC guide, updated July 28, 2026. That is Top10VPN’s editorial ranking, not a claim that it is objectively best for every Windows user. The Independent also identifies its uncomplicated app as a strength.
#1 Best Overall

NordVPN: broader feature set
The Independent names NordVPN its overall winner, while Top10VPN places it second. If you want more controls and features, that may suit you; if you value a less involved interface, consider how much complexity you are willing to manage. NordVPN reported that Artifact Security’s 2026 comparison gave it the only Platinum rating among five providers and an overall score of 91. NordVPN’s August 10, 2026 account says the Windows tests covered IP, DNS, IPv6, WebRTC, server switching, split tunneling, and connection drops. Treat that score and result as NordVPN’s report of Artifact Security’s test, not a universal rating. NordVPN’s account.
Proton VPN Free: a practical no-cost starting point
RTINGS describes Proton VPN Free on Windows as unlimited-data service with a working kill switch, but says users cannot choose a preferred country, the server pool is restricted, and torrenting is reserved for paid service. The Independent and Top10VPN also recommend it as a free option. Check the provider’s current plan terms before relying on any specific feature, since free-plan limits can change.

- Windows app and compatibility: Check that the provider supports your Windows version and that the app’s controls are understandable to you.
- Privacy policy and audits: Read what data the provider says it collects and whether an audit is independent, recent, and relevant to the claims you care about.
- Kill switch and leak protection: Look for protection against traffic escaping the tunnel if the VPN disconnects, and consider whether the provider or an independent test evaluates IP, DNS, IPv6, or WebRTC leaks.
- Protocols and split tunneling: Check whether you can select a protocol and decide which apps or traffic use the VPN, if those controls matter to your setup.
- Performance for your tasks: Speed and access can vary by server, location, route, and service. Do not treat a reviewer’s result as a guarantee for your connection or streaming account.
- Price and free-plan restrictions: Confirm current renewal terms, server access, data limits, and any restrictions on streaming or file sharing directly with the provider.
Security.org says its Windows VPN evaluations include policy and audit checks, leak and kill-switch tests, speed measurements, streaming checks, and Windows-specific features such as split tunneling, protocols, and compatibility. That is a useful checklist, but its methodology remains that publisher’s own account. Security.org’s methodology.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Windows VPN tests can—and cannot—establish
A test result applies to the conditions and scenarios tested. The Independent says it tested services on a Windows 11 laptop with security patches installed and no other active security software; that describes its setup, not every Windows PC or a population-wide result. Audits also have boundaries: RTINGS notes that the most recent Proton VPN no-logging audit it reviewed excluded broader privacy policies and did not cover the VPN’s full source code. An audit supports conclusions only within its stated scope; it is not blanket proof of every privacy claim. RTINGS’ Windows guide.

For a decision, match the provider’s documented protections and plan terms to your own needs. A VPN can protect traffic within its tunnel and change the IP address sites observe, but it does not guarantee anonymity, eliminate all tracking, or guarantee access to a particular streaming service.
