Error code 0xC000021A is not an installer error from Windows Update. Microsoft documents it as the bug check WINLOGON_FATAL_ERROR, a blue-screen stop code meaning the Winlogon process (the part of Windows that handles sign-in and the secure desktop) terminated unexpectedly. If you saw 0xC000021A on a blue or restart screen, the failed update may be a coincidence, and the crash needs its own investigation. If the code appeared inside a Windows Update message, treat it as a separate report and look up the update-specific code instead.

The steps below separate those two situations, because they call for different fixes.

What 0xC000021A actually signals

Microsoft’s bug-check reference for 0xC000021A, last updated December 14, 2021, says: “The Winlogon process terminated unexpectedly.” The same article says a user-mode subsystem such as Winlogon or CSRSS can be fatally compromised, and that mismatched system files can also trigger the error. It does not identify the cause on any particular PC. The article is written for programmers and refers consumers to general blue-screen troubleshooting resources, so this guide uses that material as a starting point rather than a complete repair manual.

Why it gets confused with update errors

Stories about failed updates often mention several codes at once. They are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s “Troubleshoot problems updating Windows” guidance lists the following values under the message “Update failed to install.” The table separates them from 0xC000021A.

The support page does not explain each of the three update codes in detail, so do not treat any of them as a description of 0xC000021A.

Identify which situation you are in

  • Windows starts and only the update fails: follow the update path below. The update message is the error to research.
  • Blue screen shows 0xC000021A: follow the stop-code path. The update is a clue to what changed, not the proven cause.
  • Restart loop at startup: follow the stop-code path and expect to use Safe Mode or Windows recovery options.

Record these details before changing anything

  • Windows version and edition. Press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter.
  • The exact update name or KB number, and the full error text if Windows Update shows one.
  • Whether Windows still starts normally.
  • Any driver, system service, or third-party application installed or updated shortly before the failure.
  • Whether a backup was restored recently.

Stop-code path: blue screen or restart loop

Microsoft’s guidance points to a short sequence: protect your files, remove recent changes that may be involved, use Safe Mode to isolate startup components, check the system log, and check system files.

1. Back up personal files

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says: “Before trying any of the solutions below, make sure you back up your personal files.” It describes copying files to a USB drive as one option. Backing up does not fix the stop code, but it protects your data before any repair attempt.

2. Remove or disable recent software changes

If the crash followed a newly installed or updated driver, system service, or third-party application, Microsoft recommends removing or disabling that software to isolate the cause, and contacting its manufacturer about an update. In Windows 11, uninstall apps from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. For drivers, Device Manager is the usual place to roll back or uninstall a driver, but this step should be done from Safe Mode if the PC cannot stay running long enough.

3. Start in Safe Mode

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Restart now next to Advanced startup. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Restart now under Advanced startup.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. After the restart, press 4 to start in Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services. If the crash stops there, the cause is more likely to be a startup driver or service than a core Windows file, though this is an inference and not a diagnosis.

4. Check the System log in Event Viewer

  1. Press Win + R, type eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Go to Windows Logs > System.
  3. Look at Critical and Error entries recorded in the same time window as the blue screen. Note the source name, which often points to the driver or service involved.

5. Check system files

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run sfc /scannow and wait for it to finish.
  3. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair them, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then run sfc /scannow again. DISM may need an internet connection.

Microsoft describes SFC as a way to scan for and restore missing or corrupted Windows system files. A clean result does not rule out a driver or software cause.

Update path: Windows starts but the update fails

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run next to Windows Update. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, then select Windows Update.
  2. Follow the prompts and restart when the troubleshooter finishes, as Microsoft recommends.
  3. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
  4. If the update fails again, write down the exact code shown and the KB number. Compare it with the Microsoft support page for that code before trying further changes.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter page states that free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC that still fails to install updates may therefore not be receiving the fixes you expect, regardless of the stop code. Check your options with Microsoft before assuming that the troubleshooter alone will restore normal updating.

What this guidance cannot establish

No published source gives a prevalence figure for 0xC000021A, so this article does not estimate how often it occurs. The stop code has several documented possible causes, and none of the steps above is guaranteed to resolve it. An accurate diagnosis needs the Windows version, whether the PC starts, the update identifier, and the recent-change history. If the PC cannot reach Windows at all, use the recovery options described above and keep the backup in place.
