Press Windows + Shift + S, choose Rectangular snip, and drag around the content on the monitor you want. For an entire application window, choose Window instead and select that window. The capture is copied to the clipboard; paste it with Ctrl + V, or open the Snipping Tool notification to annotate and save it.
Windows does not document a separate universal “capture monitor 2 only” shortcut. The selection you draw defines the captured area, so selecting inside the target display is the dependable method on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
The best shortcut for one monitor
- Move the pointer to the monitor and content you want to capture.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool overlay appears.
- Select Rectangular snip.
- Drag from one corner of the desired area to the opposite corner. Keep the selection inside the target monitor.
- Release the mouse. Windows copies the image to the clipboard.
- Press Ctrl + V in an app such as Paint, Word, an email, or a chat. Alternatively, select the Snipping Tool notification to open the capture for markup and saving.
This works whether the display is arranged to the left, right, above, or below another monitor. You do not need to change which display is primary.
Choose the capture mode that matches your target
Rectangular snip: any area on one monitor
Rectangular snip is the most precise choice when you need part of a monitor, such as a dashboard, browser region, or dialog box. The rectangle can be any size and does not need to match the monitor’s resolution.

Window snip: one application window
In the Windows + Shift + S overlay, choose Window, then click the application window you want. This is better than manually tracing the window because Windows selects the window boundary. If the application spans monitors, the selected window—not a physical monitor—is the capture target.
Freeform snip: an irregular shape
Freeform lets you draw around an irregular object. Use it when a rectangle would include unwanted material. The result is still an image copied to the clipboard.
Full-screen snip: all visible screens or the full display area
Full screen is designed for a complete screen capture, not a user-defined one-monitor crop. Microsoft’s shortcut documentation does not establish identical multi-monitor behavior for every Windows build, so do not rely on it when the requirement is strictly one monitor. Use Rectangular snip and draw the boundary instead.

For one monitor, Windows + Shift + S offers the clearest control because you define the rectangle yourself. Alt + Print Screen is faster when the desired target is one focused window, while Windows + Print Screen is convenient when a full-screen file is acceptable.

Saving, editing, and pasting the capture
Paste it immediately
After the snip, open the destination and press Ctrl + V. This is useful for messages, documents, issue trackers, and image editors. If the destination does not accept images, open Paint or another graphics program and paste there first.
Open the Snipping Tool editor
Select the notification that appears after the capture. In Snipping Tool you can annotate, crop, and save the image. Microsoft documents Ctrl + S for saving when the capture is open in Snipping Tool. Choose the file name, folder, and supported image format offered by your Windows build.
Find files made with Windows + Print Screen
Automatic full-screen captures are stored in the PicturesScreenshots folder for the current Windows account. This shortcut does not provide the same draw-a-region workflow as Windows + Shift + S.
Print Screen settings and keyboard variations
On current Windows versions, the Print Screen key can be configured at Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. The setting controls whether pressing Print Screen opens screen snipping. If your key behaves differently from a colleague’s, check this option before troubleshooting the screenshot itself.

Physical keyboards may label the key PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. Compact laptops sometimes combine it with another key or omit it entirely. Microsoft Support notes that some hardware can use Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a screenshot alternative. Treat that combination as device-specific rather than a universal replacement; Windows + Shift + S remains the broadly applicable shortcut.
Multi-monitor details that affect the result
Identify the display before selecting
If you are unsure which physical panel is display 1 or display 2, open Settings > System > Display and use the display-identification controls. Arrange the monitor rectangles to match your desk. This helps you move the pointer to the intended panel before pressing Windows + Shift + S, but it does not add a dedicated screenshot hotkey for each monitor.
Mixed scaling and resolutions
Two monitors can have different resolutions or display scaling. The selection overlay still lets you drag a rectangle, but the pixel dimensions of the resulting image follow the selected screen area. If text looks unexpectedly large or small after pasting, check the source monitor’s scaling and the destination application’s image scaling.
Capturing menus and transient UI
Some menus disappear when focus changes. Open Windows + Shift + S only after arranging the menu, and use Rectangular snip quickly. For a complete application window, Window mode may preserve the window boundary more reliably than a rushed manual drag.

Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when I press Windows + Shift + S
- Press the Windows key and Shift together, then tap S; avoid pressing Print Screen instead.
- If the shortcut is still unresponsive, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it directly.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart if Snipping Tool itself will not open.
The capture includes part of the other monitor
Use Rectangular snip and begin and end the drag within the target display. Do not use a full-screen shortcut for this requirement. If the monitors meet at an edge, zoom your attention to the selection boundary before releasing the mouse.
The screenshot is not saved anywhere
Windows + Shift + S copies the result to the clipboard; it does not necessarily create a file automatically. Select the notification to open Snipping Tool, then use its save command or press Ctrl + S. For automatic file creation, use Windows + Print Screen and check PicturesScreenshots.
Alt + Print Screen captures the wrong thing
Alt + Print Screen captures the active window. Click the intended application first, then press the shortcut. If you need a region rather than the whole window, return to Windows + Shift + S and choose Rectangular snip.
Print Screen opens the wrong tool
Go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review the Print Screen setting. The key’s action can be changed there, and keyboard labels vary by manufacturer.
