Usually, you should keep the Windows RE tools partition. It stores the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), which can help a PC start repair tools when Windows itself has a problem. Windows may still run without an accessible WinRE, but you lose that built-in recovery route. Before resizing or deleting the partition, check that WinRE is enabled and registered, and understand your disk layout.

What the Windows RE tools partition does

The partition holds the WinRE image, winre.wim, and related recovery tools. Microsoft says the image is copied to a separate recovery partition so the PC can boot into those tools even if there is a problem with the Windows partition. Keeping recovery separate also supports automatic failover and booting partitions protected by BitLocker Drive Encryption. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment technical reference and its UEFI/GPT partition guidance.

It is a system recovery facility, not a general-purpose data volume. It may have no drive letter and rarely appear in everyday use; neither fact means it is safe to remove.

What happens if you remove it?

Removing the partition or making its image inaccessible does not necessarily stop Windows from starting normally. It does mean WinRE may no longer be configured or accessible when you need recovery tools. Microsoft’s customization documentation puts the distinction plainly: “Windows will still work but the recovery environment won’t be configured or accessible.” Microsoft’s WinRE customization guidance

That trade-off matters most when Windows will not start or needs repair. Microsoft recommends a separate recovery partition; its guidance does not recommend deleting it simply to reclaim routine disk space. The documentation reviewed does not provide a consumer usage rate or a measured failure probability for removing the partition.

How large should the partition be?

There is no single size that applies to every Windows installation. The needed space depends on the Windows version, the actual recovery image, customizations, and available free space for servicing. Microsoft’s guidance gives figures for different contexts:

Guidance context Figure What it means
UEFI client troubleshooting requirements At least 300 MB for the recovery tools partition; typically 500–700 MB is allocated for Winre.wim. The typical image allocation varies with base language and customizations. For Windows later than Windows 10 version 2004 and Windows Server 2022, this guidance specifies at least 200 MB free; earlier systems have different free-space rules. Microsoft’s UEFI client partition requirements
Windows 11 UEFI/GPT deployment sizing Actual winre.wim size, plus customizations and 250 MB of free space. This is a deployment sizing method, not a universal minimum for every existing PC. Microsoft’s Windows 11 UEFI/GPT guidance
WinRE servicing 250 MB free is recommended for successful updates. The servicing procedure checks available space and partition position before applying its example. Microsoft’s WinRE servicing guidance

These figures are not contradictory universal rules: one is a client requirement for specified systems, while the deployment and servicing guidance accounts for image content and update headroom. The Microsoft pages cited here do not show publication dates for these figures; they were accessed in 2026, which should not be mistaken for a publication year.

Why partition location matters

For Windows 11 UEFI/GPT deployments, Microsoft specifies a recovery partition separate from Windows, immediately after the Windows partition, with the recovery Type ID DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC. That placement lets Windows change or recreate the partition if a future update needs a larger recovery image. As Microsoft explains, “This allows Windows to modify and recreate the partition later if future updates require a larger recovery image.” This is deployment guidance for the specified layout, not proof that every existing PC uses that arrangement.

Check your PC before changing the partition

A safe next step depends on this installation’s WinRE registration and disk layout. Before making changes, establish:

  • Whether WinRE is enabled and where its recovery image is registered.
  • Your Windows version and whether the disk uses GPT or another partition style.
  • The recovery partition’s size, free space, and position relative to the Windows partition.
  • Whether the Windows volume is protected by BitLocker or Device Encryption.

Microsoft’s servicing procedure considers WinRE status, partition position, and available space. It may disable WinRE, back up partition contents, and resize or recreate a partition; its example has assumptions and is not a universal script for every disk layout. If a Windows update reports that the recovery partition is too small, follow the Microsoft procedure that matches your Windows version and layout rather than copying a script or deleting a partition blindly: Add an update to Windows RE.

When is removing it reasonable?

For an ordinary attempt to free a small amount of space, keeping the partition is the safer choice: the space reclaimed is weighed against losing a built-in recovery path, and Microsoft recommends separating WinRE from Windows. If you have a specific disk-layout problem, first verify the recovery image’s registration and follow applicable servicing guidance. General documentation cannot establish whether a particular PC can safely lose its partition; that requires checking the device itself.
