If printers in Windows 10, Windows 11, or a supported Windows Server release suddenly show as “HP LaserJet M101-M106,” the name and icon may be incorrect Windows printer metadata—not evidence that your printer became an HP device or that its driver has changed. Microsoft published a Printer Metadata Troubleshooter to restore printer information and remove the mismatched HP metadata.
What the HP LaserJet M101-M106 rename means
Microsoft documented a Windows issue in which printers from different manufacturers could be renamed as HP printers, most commonly “HP LaserJet M101-M106,” and their icons could change. Some Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices also automatically installed the HP Smart app. Microsoft said its investigation linked the symptoms to automatic HP Smart installation, not to an HP update. Microsoft’s Windows 10 version 22H2 known-issues page no longer lists this issue; it is best understood as a historically documented problem with a published fix, not as evidence of a new widespread incident in 2026.
A changed display name alone does not establish that Windows replaced the printer driver or that the device itself is malfunctioning. Microsoft said basic functions often remained available, though associations with another manufacturer’s apps could affect extended features. Check the driver shown in the printer’s properties and test the functions you rely on before changing drivers or replacing hardware.
Check the driver and printer functions first
- Open the affected printer’s properties in Windows and review the driver listed there. Confirm whether it matches the actual printer and your organization’s configuration.
- Test the functions you need, such as printing, copying, scanning, or faxing. A misleading name or icon is different from a failed function.
- If the driver is unexpected or a needed feature no longer works, investigate that specific driver or app issue separately; do not assume the displayed HP name proves what changed.
Run Microsoft’s Printer Metadata Troubleshooter
Microsoft’s Printer Metadata Troubleshooter reviews printer information, restores previously downloaded model information and icons, and removes “HP LaserJet M101-M106” model information, icons, and application associations from printers that do not match that model. Microsoft released the tool in January 2024; the Download Center listing was published July 15, 2024.

The Download Center lists Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2022. Check Microsoft’s KB5034510 for the requirements and instructions that apply to your Windows release before running the tool.
The tool may uninstall HP Smart, but only when it finds incorrect metadata, no HP printer or HP printer driver is installed, and the app was installed after November 25, 2023. That is a conditional action, not a general instruction to remove the app manually.

For Windows Server and managed printer queues
In a managed environment, identify the affected host or queue before making changes. Confirm the Windows Server release and the driver shown in printer properties, then follow the applicable KB5034510 instructions for the troubleshooter. Avoid deleting device-metadata folders or removing drivers as a universal response: Microsoft’s stated remediation is the dedicated metadata tool, and a driver change can affect printing independently of the incorrect label.

HP M101-M106 is also a real printer family
HP’s guide for the LaserJet Pro M101-M104 and LaserJet Ultra M105-M106 covers actual HP models. It describes renaming a network-connected printer through the HP Embedded Web Server for unique identification. That device-management feature is separate from the Windows metadata issue and does not make buying an HP printer a fix for another manufacturer’s printer appearing under the wrong name.
