If you want a Windows Media Center replacement, choose based on what you used it for: Kodi is the closest living-room media-center interface for local files; Jellyfin or Emby can serve a media library to multiple devices; and NextPVR is a Windows-capable TV and DVR backend. For live TV, you will also need compatible tuner hardware and program-guide data. None of the reviewed sources establishes that these alternatives replace Windows Media Center’s FM-radio function.
What happened to Windows Media Center?
A community answer marked accepted on Microsoft Learn Q&A says Windows Media Center was discontinued starting with Windows 10 and is unavailable in Windows 11. That is the status reported by the accepted answer, not a Microsoft product announcement. The original question, posted March 20, 2025, asks whether Windows 11 has something similar for watching TV through a tuner and listening to FM radio.
There is no single option in the reviewed documentation that reproduces every Windows Media Center feature. In particular, support for live TV does not establish support for FM radio. Choose an alternative by the job you need it to do.

Use Kodi for a Windows living-room media center
Kodi is the most direct choice if what you miss is browsing local or network-stored movies, music, and other media from a TV-connected computer. Its Windows page says it works on Windows 10 and 11 and documents support for several MCE remotes. Kodi’s About page describes it as a free, open-source media player and entertainment hub. The Kodi Foundation also states: “Kodi does not provide any media content or sources.”

For live television or recording, Kodi is the interface, not the whole DVR system. Its PVR functionality works with a separate backend, such as NextPVR, MediaPortal, MythTV, or Tvheadend. That means setup involves choosing and configuring a backend as well as connecting the tuner and guide. Advanced PVR use may require additional hardware. If you only want to play files, you do not need to buy a TV tuner.
Choose Jellyfin or Emby to serve a library to multiple devices
Jellyfin
Jellyfin is a personal-media server rather than a one-PC-only replacement shell: it organizes and streams a library to client devices, and can also provide live TV and recordings when configured with a supported tuner and guide source. Its documentation lists HDHomeRun and M3U tuner sources, and Schedules Direct and XMLTV guide formats. Schedules Direct guide data is paid for users in the US and Canada; coverage and suitable guide sources vary by location.

Live TV setup requires more than plugging in a tuner. You need a source for the channels and program-guide listings, then must map the guide data to the channels the tuner receives. Jellyfin’s Windows installation documentation is available for people who want to host the server on Windows.

Emby
Emby also uses a server-and-client model and documents Live TV and DVR support. Its setup process calls for configuring a tuner or M3U source, adding guide data, and mapping the channel lineup. Emby lists HDHomeRun, Windows Hauppauge tuners with WinTV 8.5 or later installed, and M3U sources. Its out-of-box guide-data coverage is the US, Canada, and UK, and Live TV/DVR requires Emby Premiere. That coverage should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Use NextPVR when TV recording is the priority
NextPVR is a Windows-capable TV server and DVR option for people whose main goal is scheduling and recording television rather than replacing every part of Windows Media Center with one application. The vendor describes live TV, recordings, a web configuration interface, clients, and integrations including Kodi, Jellyfin, and Emby. You can use it as the TV backend and select a separate interface for watching or browsing media. The vendor says it is free for personal, non-commercial use.
What to know about Plex
Plex is another possible HTPC and tuner-DVR option. Its support pages describe a Plex HTPC client for a PC connected directly to a TV and note that tuner support varies by region and device or operating system. Because current detailed compatibility information cannot be established here, do not assume that a particular tuner works with Plex; consult Plex’s supported DVR tuners and antennas list before choosing hardware.

Live TV requires hardware, guide data, and a regional compatibility check
Software alone cannot receive broadcast TV. A tuner must support the signal standard used in your area, and the software must support that tuner. You also need an antenna or other appropriate signal source and program-guide data for scheduling and recording; a tuner does not guarantee that channels are receivable at your location.

These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of availability or compatibility in every country. Check the exact model’s supported broadcast standard and confirm it works with your selected software. Jellyfin and Emby both document HDHomeRun support, but model and regional fit still matter.
Does an alternative replace FM radio?
The available product documentation establishes live-TV or media-library functions, not that Kodi, Jellyfin, Emby, NextPVR, or Plex replaces Windows Media Center’s FM-radio feature. If FM reception is essential, verify that a specific tuner, application, and regional setup explicitly supports FM before treating it as a replacement; TV tuner support by itself is not evidence of FM support.
