Press Windows key + Up arrow (Win+Up) to maximize the active window. The shortcut applies to the window currently in focus; it is different from the shortcuts that minimize, restore, or snap a window to one side.
What does Win+Up do?
Win+Up maximizes the active window, expanding it to fill the available desktop area. Microsoft lists this as the action for “Windows key + Up arrow” in its Windows keyboard-shortcut reference.
The window must be active—that is, the focused window you are currently working in. Click the window first if another app or the desktop has focus, then press Win+Up.

- Click the window you want to enlarge, or use Alt+Tab to bring it to the foreground.
- Hold the Windows logo key and press the Up arrow.
- Release both keys. The active window should maximize if the app and its current state support the action.
Microsoft’s keyboard tips describe the focused window as moving through minimized, windowed, and maximized states with Win+Up. The shortcut’s intended action is maximize, but the result can depend on the window’s current state or application behavior. Some common shortcuts do not work in every app.

How the related window shortcuts differ
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Win+Up | Maximizes the active window. |
| Win+Down | Minimizes the active window. |
| Win+Shift+Down | Restores a snapped or maximized window. |
| Win+Left or Win+Right | Snaps the active window to the corresponding side of the screen; it does not maximize it. |
| Win+Z | Opens Snap layouts. |
These actions come from Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut list and Snap guide. Snap can arrange windows using a keyboard, mouse, or touch. Its options are configured at Settings > System > Multitasking.
Windows version and support note
Microsoft’s Snap guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, standard support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, according to the guide. The Win+Up shortcut appears in Microsoft’s current keyboard-shortcut documentation; as with other shortcuts, an application may handle window states differently.
