To choose which GPU a specific app or game uses in Windows 11, start with Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Windows’ per-app graphics preference takes precedence over NVIDIA Control Panel’s preferred-graphics-processor setting when Windows has a preference for that app. Use NVIDIA Control Panel for its separate global and per-program driver-level 3D settings.
Windows Graphics Settings vs. NVIDIA Control Panel: what each one does
These tools overlap when choosing a GPU, but they are not interchangeable. Windows Graphics Settings sets a graphics preference for an individual app. NVIDIA Control Panel’s Manage 3D Settings configures driver-level 3D behavior globally or for specific programs.

How to make a game use your NVIDIA GPU in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the game. If it is not listed, use the add-app control available in your Windows build.
- Select Options, choose High performance, then select Save.
- Close and restart the game so the new preference can take effect.
On systems with more than one GPU, Windows lists “Let Windows decide (Power saving),” “Power saving,” and “High performance.” The high-performance label is Windows’ preference category, not an FPS guarantee; check which adapter corresponds to each choice on your computer. Microsoft’s instructions describe the Graphics settings route and restarting the app.
What NVIDIA Control Panel adds
Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings to set global driver defaults or overrides for particular programs. NVIDIA’s reference includes controls such as antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, CUDA GPU selection, power management, and texture filtering. The set of controls varies by graphics card and application, so a particular option may not appear on every system.

For GPU selection, NVIDIA’s guidance states: “Beginning with Windows 10 20H1, the Windows OS assigns the graphics processor to use for various applications, and overrides any settings made in the NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Preferred graphics processor setting for that application.” NVIDIA’s preferred-graphics-processor help says its setting applies when Windows has not set a preference for the app.
Why a game may still use integrated graphics—or the NVIDIA GPU
The app was already running
A running program may continue using the processor it started with. Save the new preference and restart the app; both NVIDIA and Microsoft advise restarting after a change.

The driver or app requires a particular GPU
A preference is not an unconditional hardware-routing command. NVIDIA says its driver may override a selection when a program requires a particular GPU for CUDA, advanced DirectX support, or compatibility.
An external display is connected to an NVIDIA-driven port
If a monitor is connected to a port driven by the NVIDIA GPU, programs and video launched on that display use that GPU regardless of the preferred-processor selection described in NVIDIA’s help. Port wiring and graphics modes vary by laptop; consult the PC maker’s documentation if display behavior is unexpected.

Hybrid graphics is selecting automatically
On supported hybrid-graphics notebooks, NVIDIA’s driver can choose integrated or high-performance graphics according to program needs. NVIDIA GPU Activity can show which programs and displays are using the NVIDIA GPU. See NVIDIA’s Optimus guidance.
The NVIDIA preferred-processor control is missing
That control is not available on every system. NVIDIA describes it as available only on systems using its power-saving GPU technology. If the control is absent, use Windows Graphics Settings for the per-app preference when the option is available.

Which setting should you choose on a laptop?
High-performance graphics can shorten battery life. NVIDIA says choosing the integrated processor can provide longer battery life, while a high-performance selection may reduce it. For apps that do not need the discrete GPU, choose Windows’ decision or the power-saving preference when you expect to run unplugged. Use high performance for an app that needs the discrete GPU, while keeping in mind that the label does not guarantee a specific performance result.
Does NVIDIA App replace NVIDIA Control Panel?
NVIDIA App has acquired some legacy Control Panel settings, but the exact feature set is version-specific. A report dated August 30, 2025, says version 11.0.5.245 added several 3D and multi-monitor functions; that does not establish that every Control Panel setting or menu is present in every current NVIDIA App release. Check NVIDIA’s current app documentation for its latest controls rather than relying on a universal click path.
