Use Windows.Graphics.Capture for a user-selected window or display, Desktop Duplication for a continuous desktop stream, BitBlt for a traditional GDI pixel copy, and PrintWindow when you want the target application to render its window. They capture different things and have different lifecycle, performance and user-consent implications.

If you would rather call a hosted screenshot service than maintain Windows capture code, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to consider: it removes common consent UI before capture, bills only clean captures, and has a low-cost paid tier.

Choose by capture model

Option Best fit What it actually captures Main obligations
ScreenshotNeo Server-side screenshots, PDFs and automation A URL rendered by ScreenshotNeo’s browser service API key, HTTP handling and service-side options
Windows.Graphics.Capture One window or display selected by the user; snapshots or streams Frames from the selected item Use the system picker, check support and account for the visible yellow capture border
DXGI Desktop Duplication Remote desktop, collaboration and repeated desktop frames Desktop frames exposed through a DXGI surface, with update and pointer metadata Release frames, process dirty/move regions, handle rotation and recreate duplication after display changes
BitBlt Traditional desktop or rectangle capture in a GDI application Pixels copied between device contexts Choose compatible DCs, raster-operation flags and clipping behavior
PrintWindow A known window whose application can render its contents The target app’s rendering into your supplied DC The call is synchronous and may block; it is not a desktop-pixel copy

The deciding questions are: do you already know the target, do you need one image or a stream, should the result be the pixels currently visible on the desktop or an app-rendered window, and do you need GPU-friendly update metadata?

Windows.Graphics.Capture: the default for user-selected captures

Microsoft describes this namespace as providing frames from a display or application window for video streams or snapshots. The system picker lets the user choose the item, and Windows draws a yellow border around an active capture so the activity is visible.

When to use it

  • A user should choose a window or monitor at capture time.
  • You need an occasional screenshot or a frame stream from that selected item.
  • You want Windows to handle selection UI rather than building your own window enumeration and consent flow.

Support and lifecycle

Check GraphicsCaptureSession.IsSupported() before presenting capture controls. Support depends on the Windows device and app model; follow Microsoft’s setup requirements for the project type you target. Keep the capture item and frame pool alive for as long as frames are needed, stop the session when the user ends capture, and release graphics resources during shutdown.

Implementation outline

  1. Check GraphicsCaptureSession.IsSupported().
  2. Create the documented graphics-capture picker for your app model.
  3. Ask the user to select a display or application window.
  4. Create a frame pool and capture session using the selected item.
  5. Handle arriving frames, copy or encode the frame, then release it promptly.
  6. Stop and dispose the session and frame pool when capture ends or the target changes.

This path is intentionally user-visible. Do not treat the yellow border as an error or attempt to present it as an invisible background capture mechanism.

DXGI Desktop Duplication: for a desktop stream

Desktop Duplication is designed for repeated desktop frames such as remote access, collaboration and streaming. Frames arrive through a DXGI surface, and the API supplies dirty-region, move-region and pointer metadata. A client can therefore process only changed areas instead of treating every frame as a completely new bitmap.

Operational requirements

  • Acquire frames, process the surface and release each frame before acquiring the next one.
  • Consume move and dirty rectangles, plus pointer information, when reconstructing the desktop.
  • Apply the display’s rotation rules; a rotated monitor may require transforming the acquired surface.
  • Recreate duplication interfaces after the documented desktop or display-mode changes. A long-running remote session must treat recreation as normal recovery, not as a fatal one-time exception.

Desktop Duplication is available to desktop applications starting with Windows 8. It is a better abstraction than BitBlt when update regions, cursor state and sustained GPU-oriented processing matter.

BitBlt: a GDI rectangle copy

BitBlt copies a rectangle from a source device context (DC) to a destination DC. The raster-operation code controls how source and destination pixels combine; SRCCOPY performs a direct copy. Adding CAPTUREBLT includes layered windows over the target in the copied result.

What a safe capture flow looks like

  1. Obtain the source DC for the desktop or chosen window region.
  2. Create a compatible memory DC and compatible bitmap sized for the capture.
  3. Select the bitmap into the memory DC.
  4. Call BitBlt with SRCCOPY (and CAPTUREBLT when layered windows should be included).
  5. Read or encode the bitmap, restore the previous selected object, then delete GDI objects and release DCs.

Clipping is applied on the destination DC. Unsupported source/destination device combinations or source transformations can make the operation fail, so check the return value and report the Win32 error before using the bitmap.

Minimal C++ example

The following captures the primary desktop into a 32-bit compatible bitmap. It demonstrates the resource order; production code should add image encoding and RAII wrappers.

#include <windows.h>

int main() {
    HDC screen = GetDC(nullptr);
    HDC memory = CreateCompatibleDC(screen);
    int width = GetSystemMetrics(SM_CXSCREEN);
    int height = GetSystemMetrics(SM_CYSCREEN);
    HBITMAP bitmap = CreateCompatibleBitmap(screen, width, height);
    HGDIOBJ old = SelectObject(memory, bitmap);

    BOOL ok = BitBlt(memory, 0, 0, width, height, screen, 0, 0,
                     SRCCOPY | CAPTUREBLT);
    if (!ok) {
        DWORD error = GetLastError();
        // Log error before cleanup.
    }

    SelectObject(memory, old);
    DeleteObject(bitmap);
    DeleteDC(memory);
    ReleaseDC(nullptr, screen);
    return ok ? 0 : 1;
}

This copies pixels; it does not invoke a user picker and it does not provide a frame stream or dirty-region metadata.

PrintWindow: ask the application to render

PrintWindow sends a request to the owning application to render a particular window into a device context you provide. Microsoft documents it as a synchronous function, so the call can block while the target processes the request. PW_CLIENTONLY requests only the client area.

Use it when the target window is already known and an app-rendered representation is what you need. It is not equivalent to copying the rectangle currently visible on the desktop: the result depends on how the target application handles the request. Set a timeout or isolate the call if a nonresponsive application could stall your capture workflow, and check the Boolean result before encoding the DC.

Decision guide

One screenshot selected by a person

Choose Windows.Graphics.Capture. It supplies the picker and makes capture visible. If the window handle is already known and you specifically need the app’s rendering rather than visible desktop pixels, evaluate PrintWindow.

Many frames for streaming or remote control

Choose Desktop Duplication. Its update and pointer metadata can reduce work and bandwidth. Build recovery for frame-acquisition failures, rotation and duplication recreation.

A simple GDI utility

Choose BitBlt for a bounded rectangle and a conventional device-context workflow. It is straightforward, but you own DC, bitmap and GDI cleanup and must choose the raster operation deliberately.

A website screenshot, PDF or automated pipeline

Use a hosted service instead of installing a Windows capture stack. ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It also supports element capture, full-page lazy-image loading, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, cookies, headers, device presets, dark mode, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks and bulk capture.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo handles website rendering in the cloud. Before the capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Reliability, performance and cost considerations

Frame lifetime and resource cleanup

For native APIs, release acquired frames and graphics objects as soon as possible. A leak in a repeatedly executed capture loop eventually appears as degraded performance or capture failure. Recreate Desktop Duplication interfaces after display topology or mode changes, and recreate frame-pool resources when the selected item’s size changes.

Visible output versus rendered output

Desktop Duplication and BitBlt aim at desktop pixels. PrintWindow asks the application to render, so minimized, occluded or custom-drawn windows can behave differently. Windows.Graphics.Capture follows the selected capture item and exposes the system’s user-facing capture state.

Troubleshooting

The picker or session is unavailable

Call GraphicsCaptureSession.IsSupported() and verify the app-model and Windows requirements for your target. Do not assume that code valid on one device or project type is valid everywhere.

The capture has a yellow border

That border is the system’s indication of an active Windows.Graphics.Capture session. It is expected behavior, not a rendering defect.

BitBlt returns failure or a black image

Confirm that both DCs and the compatible bitmap were created, that the bitmap is selected into the destination DC, and that width and height are valid. Check the return value immediately and inspect GetLastError(). Try CAPTUREBLT when layered windows are part of the expected result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Desktop Duplication stops after a monitor change

Release the old frame, tear down the duplication interface and recreate it for the new desktop configuration. Re-query display dimensions and rotation before resuming.

PrintWindow hangs

The function is synchronous and the target application processes the request. Run it where a blocked call cannot freeze your UI, enforce an application-level timeout strategy, and treat a nonresponsive target as a recoverable capture failure.

A ScreenshotNeo response is not the expected image

Inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers, then check the URL, wait conditions, viewport or device preset, and any custom CSS, JavaScript, cookie or request-blocking rules. A bot check, blank page, timeout or failed load is not billed.

FAQ

Can I replace Desktop Duplication with BitBlt for remote desktop software?

You can copy pixels with BitBlt, but it does not provide Desktop Duplication’s dirty/move rectangles or pointer metadata. That usually means more work to detect and transmit changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does PrintWindow capture what the user currently sees?

Not necessarily. It requests rendering from the owning application, whereas a desktop-pixel method copies what is present in the desktop composition at the capture location.

Is Windows.Graphics.Capture invisible to the user?

No. Its system picker selects the target and Windows displays a yellow border during active capture.

Which option is appropriate for a web page?

For a URL rather than your own Windows desktop, a browser-based service such as ScreenshotNeo avoids maintaining a local browser and native capture pipeline.
