Microsoft’s Cloud PC runs in its cloud and streams a personalized Windows desktop to a device you already have—or to an optional Windows 365 Link terminal. Whether it can replace your PC depends on your apps, peripherals, connection, licensing and ongoing cost.
What Windows 365 does
Windows 365 is a hosted Windows desktop service, not a physical computer delivered to your door. Microsoft describes it as securely streaming your Windows desktop, apps, settings and content from the Microsoft Cloud to a Cloud PC. An administrator assigns a suitable license and provisioning policy to create the Cloud PC.
You connect through a browser or app from Windows, Mac, iOS or Android. The device you connect from still matters: it provides the screen, keyboard, pointer and other local connections, while the Cloud PC supplies the Windows computing environment.
Can Windows 365 replace your PC?
It can replace the local Windows environment for supported work, particularly when an organization values centrally provisioned and managed desktops. But that is not the same as replacing every PC. The service still depends on a client device and network access, and the available Microsoft material does not establish that every app, peripheral or workload will work well for every user.

| Enterprise | Organizations needing Intune management | Requires qualifying Windows Enterprise, Intune and Entra ID P1 licenses; some Microsoft 365 subscriptions include these entitlements | Unlimited users; no user limit stated by Microsoft |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need Windows 365 Link?
No. Windows 365 Link is an optional physical terminal designed to connect directly to a Cloud PC, and Microsoft says it is available in select markets. You can also use supported browser or app access from a Windows PC, Mac, iPhone or iPad, or Android device. A dedicated terminal may suit a fixed or shared desk, but it is not a prerequisite for using the service.

What to check before replacing a local PC
- Workload: Identify the applications you need and verify their suitability on the Cloud PC configuration you are considering.
- Connection and accessories: Confirm that your usual network and required peripherals support the way you work.
- Plan and entitlements: Compare Business, Enterprise or Flex against your user count, concurrency needs, management approach and existing Microsoft licenses.
- Total recurring cost: Check current country-specific pricing, configuration, billing term, tax and possible network charges.
- Access device: Decide whether an existing supported device is sufficient or a dedicated Windows 365 Link terminal makes sense for your workspace.
Verdict
Windows 365 is a viable way to move some Windows work into a managed cloud desktop, but it is not a universal replacement for a PC. It makes the most sense when the applications and access conditions fit and centralized setup is valuable. Keep a local PC in the comparison if your work depends on unverified apps or peripherals, or if the subscription and connectivity requirements outweigh the benefits for your situation.
