Microsoft said the name carried forward the familiar Windows 2000 server identity for enterprise customers. The contemporary debate was whether that continuity would make sense to IT buyers while confusing consumers who encountered the name in retail.
What did “Windows 2002” refer to?
A May 6, 2001 BetaNews article by Nate Mook reported that Microsoft planned to call the upcoming Whistler Server family “Windows 2002.” At the time, the product was still in development; the article did not describe Windows 2002 as a finalized, shipping product name. Why did Microsoft favor the name?
Mark Perry, then Microsoft’s Senior Director of Windows Server Marketing, said the name followed the company’s enterprise-server naming and drew on customers’ familiarity with Windows 2000:
“The name Windows 2002 is consistent with the rest of Microsoft’s enterprise server naming. Microsoft felt the enterprise server customer, who is really the one to see this product, already has familiarity with the Windows 2000 name.”

That was Microsoft’s stated rationale: signal continuity to enterprise server customers. Perry also called the planned release an evolutionary continuation of the Windows 2000 server family. BetaNews, May 6, 2001
Why was the choice debated?
The article set the naming question against changes in Microsoft’s Windows strategy. It noted that Windows variants were moving toward a common code base and that the organizational divide between consumer and business Windows had narrowed. It also described Windows XP as another evolutionary continuation of Windows 2000.

Mook raised the possibility that a year-based server name might confuse ordinary consumers encountering it in retail, even if enterprise customers understood the lineage. That was the article’s analysis, not a finding from a consumer study. Its alternatives included a date-based naming scheme, Windows XP, and a return to NT; the article did not say Microsoft had officially adopted those alternatives.

“The goal for Whistler Server is to build on the reliability, manageability and scalability that customers value in Windows 2000, while offering support for new, high-performance 64-bit hardware architectures based on the Intel Itanium processors.”
In other words, Microsoft presented Whistler Server as an evolution of Windows 2000 Server, with planned support for Intel Itanium-based 64-bit hardware. The BetaNews article does not establish how those goals performed in a released product. BetaNews, May 6, 2001

What was known about its timing and final form?
The product was not yet feature complete when the article appeared. Perry said the final feature set and packaging would take shape in response to feedback from customers, partners, and developers during beta. The article reported that server editions were then slated for early the following year. That was a May 2001 forecast, not a current release date or confirmation of the final product name.
