A VPN kill switch can make it look as though Windows 11 has lost internet access at startup—but it does not necessarily disconnect your PC from Wi-Fi. First check whether Windows is still connected to the wireless network. If it is, investigate the VPN tunnel and kill-switch state; if the Wi-Fi connection itself drops, also check the wireless adapter, driver, radio, and router.

First distinguish “Wi-Fi disconnected” from “connected, no internet”

These symptoms point to different parts of the connection. Wi-Fi association means your PC is connected to the wireless access point. Internet access depends on traffic being routed beyond that connection.

What you see after startup What it suggests What to check next
Windows says the Wi-Fi network is disconnected, or the network is no longer shown as connected. The wireless link may have dropped. A VPN kill switch alone does not establish why Wi-Fi disconnected. Check Wi-Fi is enabled, the physical wireless switch, the adapter, recent driver or firmware changes, and the access point. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends starting with Windows diagnostics.
Windows remains connected to Wi-Fi, but websites and other internet services do not work. Traffic may be blocked or failing beyond the wireless connection. A VPN that has not connected, or a kill switch waiting for its tunnel, is one possible cause. Check the VPN app’s connection status and its kill-switch guidance. Microsoft notes that when Wi-Fi shows connected but connectivity fails, an app or firewall may be involved. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps can help narrow it down.

A taskbar Wi-Fi indicator by itself does not prove that internet traffic is working—or that the wireless connection has dropped. Record the exact Windows status and whether the target network still appears connected.

What a VPN kill switch does—and what it does not prove

A kill switch is designed to block traffic under specified VPN-disconnection conditions. NordVPN says its Windows Internet Kill Switch cuts off internet access when the device is disconnected from NordVPN servers; Proton VPN says its kill switch blocks internet traffic if the VPN connection drops. Those descriptions explain how the named features behave, but they do not prove that a particular startup problem is caused by a VPN.

Internet-wide blocks and app-specific switches are different

NordVPN distinguishes its Internet Kill Switch from its App Kill Switch: the latter closes selected applications if the VPN connection drops and is off by default. Proton VPN’s advanced kill switch only allows internet access while connected to Proton VPN; Proton also says this mode can prevent access to devices on the local network. Other providers may implement similarly named options differently, so use the instructions for your VPN app and version.

For a direct description of NordVPN’s feature, see NordVPN’s Windows kill-switch explanation. Proton VPN describes its options in its kill-switch guidance.

Diagnose Wi-Fi connected but no internet after boot

  1. Record what Windows and the VPN report. Note whether the network is connected, the time the failure occurs, and whether the VPN app says connected, reconnecting, or disconnected. Microsoft recommends capturing the baseline state and reproduction time when investigating connectivity problems. See Microsoft’s technical troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Run Windows’ initial check. In Windows 11, start with the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Get Help app, as described by Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting page. Confirm that Wi-Fi is enabled, any physical wireless switch is on, and the adapter supports the network’s frequency.
  3. Check whether the VPN tunnel is up. If Wi-Fi remains connected while internet traffic fails, inspect the VPN app’s status and follow its provider’s current connection and kill-switch instructions. Do not assume a setting or menu path from another VPN applies to yours.
  4. Use a temporary isolation test only if appropriate. You can briefly disconnect the VPN or disable its kill switch to see whether internet access returns. This removes the kill switch’s traffic-blocking protection for the duration of the test; it is a diagnostic step, not a standing security recommendation. Restore your intended protection afterward.
  5. For NordVPN, follow its published sequence. Its Windows guidance recommends checking for an app update, trying its recommended automatic protocol selection, and restarting, with a connectivity check after each step. The sequence is described at NordVPN’s Windows no-internet troubleshooting page.

If Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting on startup

When Windows actually loses its wireless association, investigate the wireless connection in addition to the VPN. Check Wi-Fi settings and any hardware switch, then note whether the problem began after a Windows update, driver or firmware change, VPN installation, profile change, authentication-policy change, or access-point configuration change.

Before deleting Wi-Fi profiles, removing an adapter or driver, resetting the network stack, or restarting network components, record the existing state and when the issue can be reproduced. Microsoft’s technical guidance recommends capturing baseline information and relevant changes to make troubleshooting more useful.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

A USB Wi-Fi adapter is relevant only if Windows or the PC maker’s diagnostics point to an unsupported or failing built-in adapter. It will not fix a VPN kill switch that is blocking internet traffic while the wireless connection remains active.

Why a network reset should not be the first unexplained fix

A network reset can remove saved configuration, so use it only after simpler checks and provider-specific troubleshooting. NordVPN warns that its network reset removes previously used Wi-Fi networks and passwords, VPN settings, and APN settings. Read NordVPN’s reset instructions and warning before proceeding; make sure you can reconnect to your Wi-Fi and restore any settings you rely on.

What startup timing can—and cannot—tell you

If internet access returns when the VPN connects, or the VPN app reports that it is reconnecting while Wi-Fi stays associated, that is useful evidence to investigate the VPN tunnel and kill-switch configuration. If the Wi-Fi network itself disappears or Windows reports disconnection, the wireless adapter, driver, radio, or access point also needs attention.

The provider documentation describes kill-switch behavior and troubleshooting, but does not establish a universal Windows 11 startup race across VPN products. Proton VPN says its Windows app attempts to reconnect to the last VPN server after an accidental disconnection. It also warns that after events such as a major Windows update or reset, hardware change, or BIOS update, users with its advanced kill switch enabled may need to sign back into Windows after powering on. See Proton VPN’s Windows advanced kill-switch notes.
