For most Windows 11 problems, start with the Get Help troubleshooter that matches what is failing. Try the least disruptive option first, record any error code, and back up important files before recovery steps that could affect them. Use the symptom guide below to choose a next step.
Windows Update will not install or is stuck
Open the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help and follow its prompts. Microsoft recommends this as the starting point for Windows 11 update problems.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help.
- If the problem remains, match the error code or symptom to Microsoft’s update troubleshooting instructions.
- Where relevant, check that the PC has an internet connection and enough available disk space.
- Restart the PC, then check for updates again.
The Microsoft guide covers cases such as “Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%” and an installation that stops between 51% and 99%. Follow its instructions for the specific error rather than deleting update files or changing system settings without a clear reason.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Wi-Fi or internet will not connect
Start with the Get Help Network and Internet troubleshooter, then use Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection steps if needed. A Wi-Fi indicator means the PC is connected to a wireless network; it does not establish that a particular website or app can reach the internet.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- If only one app or website fails: check whether other apps and sites work. The issue may be limited to that service or app, or involve a firewall.
- If several devices on Wi-Fi fail: investigate the wireless network and router as well as the PC.
- If using Ethernet: check that the cable is firmly connected and try another router port. Microsoft’s Ethernet guidance notes that if wired internet fails on multiple PCs, the router, internet service provider, or network adapter may be involved.
Windows will not start
Startup Repair is a Windows Recovery Environment option for certain problems that prevent Windows from starting. It scans for issues and attempts repairs, but it cannot guarantee that the PC will boot successfully.
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment. If Windows cannot start normally, follow Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions for reaching the recovery options.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Choose the Windows installation if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions.
An encrypted PC may ask for its BitLocker recovery key to use recovery tools. If Windows starts again, back up important files before trying broader recovery. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss; its recovery options guide explains the scope of the available choices. If Windows will not start and you need to copy files first, a USB drive is one possible destination.

The PC restarts or shows a stop code
A stop code or unexpected restart can involve hardware, a driver, or software. Microsoft’s blue-screen guidance recommends considering all three rather than assuming the cause from the screen alone.
- Write down the stop code and any “What failed” module text shown before the PC restarts.
- If the problem began just after new hardware was installed, shut down and remove that hardware as an initial diagnostic.
- If normal startup is unreliable, use Windows Startup Settings to enter Safe Mode and continue troubleshooting.
For repeated unexpected restarts, consult Microsoft’s stop-code and restart troubleshooting guide. Do not treat a stop code alone as proof that a particular part has failed.

A Windows feature or device is not working
Get Help includes troubleshooters for specific Windows functions and connected devices. Open the Windows troubleshooters list, choose the tool that matches the symptom, and follow its prompts.
- Audio, Bluetooth, camera, and printer problems
- Program compatibility and video playback
- Windows Media Player, BITS, and network diagnostics
A matching troubleshooter is a sensible first check, not a promise that the issue will be fixed. If it does not resolve the problem, use Microsoft’s instructions for that feature or device and note any error it reports.

Choose the next step by fit and risk
Match the recovery action to the failure instead of escalating automatically. A feature troubleshooter addresses that feature; Startup Repair is specifically for a PC that cannot start. Microsoft’s recovery options guide recommends beginning with the least disruptive applicable option.
- Try first: the Get Help troubleshooter for the symptom, followed by the relevant Microsoft error-specific instructions.
- Use for a boot failure: Startup Repair in Windows Recovery Environment.
- Consider after an update: removing an update only when the timing and symptoms point to it, following Microsoft’s instructions for that option.
- Before broader recovery: understand the effect on files and apps, and copy important files somewhere safe if possible. Reinstalling Windows or restoring to an earlier point can have broader consequences than running a troubleshooter.
Quick Machine Recovery is a more specific case: Microsoft describes it for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later when the feature is enabled and a widespread outage causes repeated boot failures. It is not a general first step for everyday startup problems.
