Only open an RDP file when you expected it, can verify its publisher and destination, and understand which local resources it requests. Keep unneeded resource options turned off. If the file, remote computer, or requested access surprises you, cancel and confirm with the sender or your IT team through a separate channel.

Microsoft introduced new warnings for connections started by opening RDP files in the April 2026 security update. The guidance applies to Windows 11 and supported Windows 10 and Windows Server versions. Typing a computer name directly into Remote Desktop Connection is unchanged.

What the Windows 11 RDP warning tells you

After the April 2026 security update, the first time an account opens an RDP file, Remote Desktop Connection displays an educational dialog about the risks. If the user allows RDP-file connections, that educational dialog does not appear again for that account. A separate connection security dialog appears before each connection started from an RDP file. It identifies the remote computer and lists local resources the file requests. Those resource options are off by default unless you explicitly enable them. Microsoft explains the warning behavior.

The warning is not itself a finding that the connection is malicious. It is a prompt to check the file, destination, publisher information, and requested access before deciding.

How to judge the publisher and file

What the dialog shows What it establishes How to respond
Unknown publisher The RDP file is unsigned, so Windows cannot verify who created it or whether it changed after creation. Proceed only if you expected the file and have independently confirmed the sender and destination; otherwise cancel and ask IT.
A publisher name, but not one your organization has configured as trusted A digital signature identifies the entity that signed the file and indicates it has not been altered since signing. It does not prove the file is safe. Check the full publisher name against the organization you expect, and verify the connection through a trusted channel.
A publisher trusted by your organization Organization policy may suppress the warning and permit the file’s requested redirections automatically. Follow your organization’s procedures. A trusted publisher is a policy decision, not a reason to ignore what access the file requests.

A malicious signer could use a name that resembles a legitimate organization, so do not rely on a familiar-looking name alone. Microsoft’s user guidance is direct: “Never open an RDP file you weren’t expecting, even if the email looks legitimate.” Read Microsoft’s guidance on RDP-file warnings.

Check the connection before allowing it

  1. Confirm that you expected the file. Do not open an unsolicited RDP attachment or download just because the message looks authentic. Contact the purported sender using a separate channel, such as a phone call.
  2. Read the remote computer name or address. If it is unfamiliar or does not match the service you were told to use, cancel.
  3. Check the full publisher name. A signature indicates identity and integrity since signing, not that the file’s destination or requests are appropriate.
  4. Review each local-resource option. Leave anything you do not need unchecked. Enable only access required for a verified session.
  5. Stop when anything is unexpected. Contact your IT or security team rather than trying to resolve uncertainty by clicking through.

What local resources an RDP session can access

Redirection makes selected local resources available to the remote computer. The exact options can vary with Windows version. Microsoft documents these categories and their implications in its overview of local device redirection.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  • Drives: The remote computer can read and write local hard drives, USB drives, and mapped network drives. This can expose files, permit files to be written locally, or give access to files on mapped shares.
  • Clipboard: Copied text and other contents can move in both directions. Remote software may read sensitive material you copy, and remote content may enter your local clipboard.
  • Smart cards and Windows Hello for Business: The remote computer may use redirected credentials to authenticate as you on that system or other systems it can reach.
  • WebAuthn, passkeys, and security keys: A remote session can trigger authentication prompts on your local device. Windows indicates when a WebAuthn request comes from a remote session; do not approve a prompt you did not expect.
  • Microphones and other recording devices: Remote applications may record audio from your local environment.
  • Cameras and video capture devices: Remote applications may view your surroundings, documents, or screen.
  • Location: The remote computer may learn the device’s geographic location.
  • Printers: The remote session can send print jobs to a local printer.
  • Serial and parallel ports: The remote computer may interact with connected legacy or specialized hardware.
  • POS, Plug and Play, and RemoteFX USB devices: These options can expose transaction equipment or peripherals. RemoteFX USB provides deeper device access than typical application-layer redirection.

Drive access is especially consequential because it can expose or modify local and mapped-drive files. Clipboard and authentication-device access also have direct confidentiality or identity implications. Their presence does not mean a connection is malicious; choose based on the verified session’s actual needs.

Why a company RDP file may say “Unknown publisher”

“Unknown publisher” means the file is unsigned, not necessarily that the company or destination is fraudulent. Ask your IT team to verify the file and, where appropriate, provide a signed version. Do not bypass the warning solely because the file appears to be work-related.

Microsoft says RDP files from Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 are typically signed by Microsoft. If a new security dialog appears for one of these connections, do not proceed; contact IT to investigate.

Administrator options for controlling RDP files

Administrators can manage the warnings and allowed files using Local Group Policy Editor at Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Connection Client. Microsoft documents these controls:

There are both machine and user policy options. Confirm your organization’s policy scope and management method before changing settings. The Microsoft policy documentation describes the controls and their effects.

High-security configuration

Microsoft’s high-security approach disables the first two allow policies and enables the trusted-thumbprints policy with only the organization’s RDP-signing certificates, preferably using SHA-2. Under this configuration, only RDP files signed by explicitly trusted publishers can open; other files are blocked, as are manually launched connections from the Remote Desktop Connection interface. This approach depends on deploying legitimate connection files and trusted publisher certificates correctly.

More permissive configuration

A more permissive setup allows users to open unsigned files and manually start connections, relying on the warning dialog and user judgment. Microsoft describes this as a temporary option for organizations that cannot immediately replace unsigned files with signed ones.

Trusted thumbprints can remove the warning

When a file’s certificate matches a configured trusted thumbprint, Remote Desktop Connection suppresses the security warning and automatically enables the redirections requested in the file. Administrators should therefore limit trusted thumbprints to the organization’s actual signing certificates and review the resource requests in the RDP files they distribute.

Microsoft updated its trusted-publisher policy in July 2026 to support SHA-2 thumbprints. SHA-1 remains only for backward compatibility; Microsoft calls it deprecated and insecure and advises migration to SHA-256 or stronger. Use the policy Help text after the July update for the required SHA-2 configuration details. See Microsoft’s policy reference.

Signing and distributing RDP files

Organizations that distribute RDP files manually can use Windows’ rdpsign.exe to sign individual files. Remote Desktop Services collections can use the certificate assigned to the RDPublishing role to sign published RemoteApp and desktop connections. Managed devices need to trust the signing certificate through the thumbprint policy to receive trusted-publisher behavior.

What is and is not affected

The April 2026 change applies to connections started by opening an RDP file. Microsoft says starting a connection by entering a computer name directly in Remote Desktop Connection is unchanged. Policy behavior is version-sensitive: Microsoft’s Policy CSP reference lists Windows 11 21H2 and later for the cited signed- and unsigned-file controls. Administrators should check current policy help and their organization’s deployment documentation.
