For a typical multi-monitor workspace, choose Extend; for a presentation where everyone needs to see the same content, choose Duplicate.
What each Windows 11 display mode does
Open the projection menu with Windows key+P. Choose a mode based on what you need on the screens:

Arrange displays so the pointer moves the right way
- Connect the monitors to the PC or dock and check that each cable is firmly connected.
- Open Settings > System > Display. Windows shows detected screens as numbered rectangles.
- Select Identify to show a number on each physical screen.
- Drag the numbered rectangles to match the monitors’ positions on your desk, then select Apply.
- Move the pointer between screens to check that it crosses at the correct edges and in the expected direction.
If a wired screen is connected but does not appear, expand Multiple displays and select Detect. The same settings area has options to remember window locations based on monitor connection and minimize windows when a monitor disconnects—useful to review if windows move or disappear after undocking a laptop.

Troubleshoot a monitor that is missing or showing the wrong mode
The screens show the same image instead of separate desktops
Open the projection menu with Windows key+P and select Extend. Then check the screen arrangement in Settings > System > Display.
A connected wired monitor is not detected
- Check the cable connection to the PC or dock.
- Go to Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays, and select Detect.
- If it remains missing, test with one external monitor. If that works but a multi-monitor setup does not, the PC’s graphics adapter may not support the requested number of displays. Check the PC or graphics adapter manufacturer’s specifications.

One video output is not enough for the setup
A display splitter duplicates one video signal; it does not create two independent extended displays. A compatible docking station or, on some PCs with USB-C, a USB video adapter may provide another output. Neither is guaranteed to work with every system: the PC’s port, graphics hardware, dock or adapter, and monitors must support the required display arrangement.
Project wirelessly to a display or another PC
Connect to a compatible wireless display
For a display that supports Miracast, turn it on and press Windows key+K, then select the display. If the screen does not have Miracast built in, a Miracast adapter connected to it may be needed. If the wireless display does not appear, check that both devices support the required wireless technology. Microsoft’s screen mirroring and projection instructions explain the connection options.

Use a Windows 11 PC as the receiving display
On the receiving PC, install the Wireless Display optional feature and launch its Wireless Display app. On the sending PC, press Windows key+K and choose the receiving PC. Microsoft specifies that the Wireless Display app is available on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. If the receiving PC is absent from the list, check that Wi-Fi is on and that the app is installed and running.

In Settings > System > Display, select the monitor you want to adjust before changing its resolution or scale. Microsoft generally recommends choosing the setting marked Recommended. A resolution below the display’s native resolution can make text less sharp or make the image appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched. See Microsoft’s guide to screen resolution and layout.

If an HDR-capable external display initially mirrors a laptop screen, HDR is not supported in that duplicate configuration. Choose Extend to view HDR content on the external HDR monitor or TV. HDR and SDR brightness can look different depending on the display model; Microsoft’s HDR settings guide explains the Windows settings.
