If your microphone isn’t working in Windows 11, first check microphone permissions, the selected input device, and the mic’s connection or mute switch. Then use Windows’ built-in microphone test and troubleshooter. Save driver changes for later, especially if Windows does not detect the device.
1. Allow microphone access in Windows
Windows privacy settings can block microphone input even when the mic is connected and selected.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- If the affected program is a Microsoft Store app, make sure its individual access toggle is on.
- For a conventional desktop program, turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
Desktop programs may not appear individually in the app list, so their absence from that list does not mean microphone access is blocked. See Microsoft’s Windows privacy settings that apps use.

- For a wired mic, reseat the connection. If it has separate plugs, make sure the microphone plug is in the microphone input.

Windows can record a short sample from the selected input device, which helps distinguish a Windows-level input problem from an app-specific configuration problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone to test and open its properties.
- Under Input settings, select Start test and speak normally.
- Stop the test and play the recorded sample. If it is too quiet, raise the input-volume slider and test again.
A successful sample shows that Windows received audio from that device; it does not confirm that every conferencing app is configured to use it. Microsoft provides details in How to set up and test microphones in Windows.

Follow the prompts, then test the mic again. The Settings layout can vary by Windows build. See Microsoft’s Fix sound or audio problems in Windows and Fix microphone problems.

Microsoft’s microphone instructions describe uninstalling the audio device in Device Manager, restarting Windows so it can try to reinstall the device, scanning for hardware changes if needed, and updating the driver. If the audio driver is missing or incompatible, Microsoft advises getting the device-specific driver from the PC or sound-card manufacturer. Use instructions for your particular computer rather than assuming one driver works for every system. See Fix microphone problems and Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.
8. Compare the built-in mic with an external microphone
If a built-in microphone still will not capture sound, connect a known-working external mic or headset and repeat the Windows test. If the external mic works while the built-in one does not, that comparison is a clue that the internal microphone may need manufacturer service; it does not prove a specific hardware fault.
An external mic is also suggested in Microsoft’s guidance for voice-typing input problems. A USB headset or microphone can be a useful diagnostic or replacement option when appropriate, but it is not the first fix to try for a permissions or app-selection problem. See Voice typing isn’t working in Windows and How to set up and test microphones in Windows.
