Keep Windows 11 memory compression enabled unless you have evidence that it is causing a specific problem. Task Manager’s “In use (Compressed)” figure is a status—not a diagnosis. If your PC repeatedly slows down while available memory is constrained, investigate what is using memory and consider a physical RAM upgrade only after confirming the computer supports one.

What compressed memory does—and what it does not do

Windows manages process memory in pages. When physical memory is under pressure, it can keep some pages in RAM in compressed form or move pages to a disk-backed paging file. Compressed memory remains in physical memory; paging uses storage. They are different memory-management responses, not interchangeable ways to add capacity.

Compression is an operating-system behavior. Installing compatible RAM increases the computer’s physical memory capacity. More capacity may ease pressure for a given workload, but it will not fix slowdowns caused by other factors. Microsoft’s virtual-memory and paging documentation explains paging, while the Microsoft-authored Windows Memory Cheat Sheet identifies Task Manager’s compressed-memory readout.

How to tell whether memory pressure is affecting your PC

  1. Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then inspect the Performance and Processes views. Microsoft describes Task Manager as a system monitor for CPU, memory, disk, and network use (Task Manager and system configuration tools).
  2. Check while the slowdown is happening. An idle snapshot may not show the conditions that cause the problem.
  3. Look beyond the compressed-memory figure. Check available memory and committed bytes, and identify processes with large working sets. Microsoft’s performance troubleshooting guidance discusses these measurements and how to relate process working sets to available memory.
  4. Compare memory with CPU and disk activity. Slow performance has multiple possible causes, including storage, startup applications, software, and aging hardware. Microsoft recommends considering these factors together in its Windows PC performance guidance.

A high memory-use percentage on its own does not establish that you need more RAM or should turn compression off. Microsoft’s troubleshooting counters are tools for investigating performance, not a universal consumer threshold for buying memory.

When adding physical RAM makes sense

Consider an upgrade when memory pressure recurs during the workload that matters to you—for example, when available memory remains constrained or commitment is high as the slowdown occurs—and the computer’s manufacturer confirms that its memory is upgradeable. If one process is using an unusually large amount of memory, investigate that application first; closing or removing unnecessary high-memory software may address the cause without a hardware change.

Before choosing a module, check the exact laptop or motherboard model and confirm:

A generic RAM kit is not a verified fit for an unspecified PC. Windows 11’s published minimum memory requirement is 4 GB, but that is an installation or upgrade requirement—not a promise that every workload will run well at the minimum. Microsoft lists maximum operating-system memory limits of 128 GB for Windows 11 Home and 2 TB for Pro on x64 and ARM64; the computer’s own hardware limits may be lower. Neither the minimum nor the edition maximum is a practical recommendation for your workload. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and Windows memory limits.

How to make the decision

What to consider What to look for
Observed memory pressure Available memory and committed bytes during the workload, rather than one idle reading.
Likely cause Processes with large working sets and whether memory demand coincides with the slowdown; check CPU and disk activity too.
Upgradeability The exact device’s memory type, installation options, and supported capacity.
Trade-off Compression is built-in memory management; a RAM upgrade costs money and is possible only on compatible computers.
Strength of evidence A compressed-memory figure alone does not show that disabling compression will improve performance.

The available Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal compression ratio, CPU-overhead figure, or controlled speed comparison between compression and adding RAM. There is no evidence here for a universal Windows 11 threshold at which you should disable compression or a guaranteed performance gain from a particular RAM upgrade.
