If Windows 11 blue-screens after a graphics driver update, first try to undo that driver change. If Windows still starts, use Device Manager to roll back the display adapter driver. If it will not start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to enter Safe Mode, then try the rollback there. The timing makes the driver a reasonable suspect, but it does not prove the driver caused the stop error.
Note the stop error before changing anything
If the blue screen shows a STOP code or a module after “What failed,” write it down or take a photo. Microsoft notes that a stop error can be caused by hardware, a driver, or software; the graphics update is a clue, not a diagnosis. You can use the code or module when deciding what to investigate if rolling back the driver does not help. See Microsoft’s guidance on troubleshooting blue-screen errors.
If Windows starts, roll back the display driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics adapter, and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver. Confirm the prompts.
- Restart Windows and check whether the blue screen returns.
You may need administrator privileges. If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, Windows does not have a previous driver package available to restore. Microsoft’s display-driver troubleshooting guidance describes rolling back a recently updated driver as a troubleshooting step; it is not a guarantee that the driver caused every blue screen.

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers, which can make it possible to undo a problematic driver change when a normal startup fails. The route into WinRE varies with whether the PC can start and with its configuration. Once in WinRE, follow this path:

- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the PC restarts to Startup Settings, choose a Safe Mode option.
- In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and follow the rollback steps above.
Startup Settings also offers Enable low-resolution video. It starts Windows with the current video driver at a low resolution and refresh rate, which may help if the issue is display settings rather than a driver that prevents normal startup. If rollback is unavailable, uninstall the display driver
If Device Manager has no previous driver to restore, use its option to uninstall the display adapter driver, then restart. Windows will attempt to reinstall a driver. That attempt does not guarantee that Windows will restore the exact earlier version or that the blue screen will be fixed. Microsoft’s display troubleshooting steps cover both rollback and uninstalling the device driver.

Choose a recovery option based on what changed
If the driver steps do not restore startup, return to WinRE and choose an option suited to the change. A standalone graphics-driver package is different from a Windows Update, so do not assume that uninstalling Windows updates will remove a separately installed GPU driver.

- Uninstall updates: Consider this when the problem followed a recent Windows update. It targets Windows updates, not necessarily a separate graphics-driver package.
- Reset or reinstall Windows: Treat these as more disruptive options. Depending on the option and configuration, files may be removed. Back up important files when possible before recovery.
Some WinRE recovery options may require the BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled. Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options before choosing a more disruptive step.

Get a replacement driver only after identifying the PC or GPU
If you need to install a driver manually, identify the exact PC model or graphics adapter and check your Windows edition and build, as well as the failed driver version if available. Microsoft says Windows Update normally supplies drivers; when a manual package is needed, the PC or display-adapter manufacturer may be the appropriate source. Laptop drivers can be specific to the system, so a generic GPU name alone may not identify the right package. See Microsoft’s guidance on updating drivers through Device Manager.
