For a dependable Windows 11 streaming setup, update Windows and graphics drivers, check which GPU runs OBS and your game, then use OBS Studio’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Select the right capture and audio sources, test privately or record a short clip, and adjust settings only when a specific problem calls for it. No single resolution, frame rate, or encoder setting suits every PC and streaming service.
What to set up in Windows—and what to set up in OBS
Windows controls system updates, graphics preferences, and features such as Game Mode. OBS controls scenes, capture sources, audio inputs, encoding, and stream output. Begin with Windows, then configure OBS, and test the whole setup before relying on it for a public stream.
OBS supports Windows 11, but compatibility alone does not mean a particular PC can stream every game, resolution, frame rate, or scene. OBS notes that the workload depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Prepare Windows 11 for streaming
Install ordinary Windows and graphics updates
Install available Windows updates and graphics-driver updates through Windows Update or your PC or GPU vendor’s normal update process. An update can be useful for compatibility, but there is no basis for assuming that a particular update will increase streaming performance.

Check graphics preferences for OBS and the game
On a laptop or desktop with more than one GPU, Windows can assign graphics preferences per app. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select or add the game and OBS, and choose an available preference such as Power saving or High performance. The options depend on the device and its GPUs. Restart each app after changing its preference.
This check matters especially on laptops with integrated and discrete graphics. OBS warns that Game Capture can fail when OBS runs on the integrated GPU while the game runs on the discrete GPU. If a game runs but its capture is blank or unreliable, check the assignments for both the game and OBS before changing unrelated settings. See the OBS GPU Selection Guide.

Know the scope of windowed-game optimizations
Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations apply to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. They are not a universal fix for every game, capture method, or performance problem. If you change the option, restart the game for the change to take effect. Microsoft describes its scope in Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11.
Leave Game Mode enabled initially
OBS’s Windows gaming-feature guidance recommends leaving Game Mode enabled on updated Windows systems. Do not switch off Windows gaming features preemptively. If OBS reports an encoding conflict, investigate Game DVR/Captures or other applications that may be using the hardware encoder; OBS describes this as a troubleshooting consideration, not a reason for every streamer to disable these features. Configure OBS with a practical baseline
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Answer according to whether you plan to stream or record and follow the prompts. OBS says the wizard considers intended use, computer resources, and network conditions. Treat its result as a starting point, not a guarantee that the stream will be smooth or meet a service’s current ingest requirements.
- Add a source for the content. For compatible 3D gameplay, try Game Capture (available on Windows). For an application or desktop, use Window Capture or Display Capture. For a webcam or capture-card input, add a Video Capture Device. Choose only the sources your scene needs.
- Check the audio mixer. Speak into the intended microphone and confirm its meter responds. Check desktop audio if you need game or application sound. If OBS picked the wrong devices, open Settings → Audio and select the intended microphone and desktop-audio devices, then check the mixer again.
- Review stream output. Open Settings → Output and review the output and encoder choices. Keep the wizard’s values unless testing shows a reason to change them. Your destination’s current requirements and your available upload capacity also matter; one fixed bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or encoder cannot be recommended for every service and PC.
- Test before going public. Make a short recording or use a private or test stream option provided by your destination. Check picture, sound, capture stability, and whether the PC remains responsive. OBS strongly encourages testing for a few minutes rather than jumping into a first stream or recording.

Choose an encoder and tune only when needed
OBS generally recommends using an available hardware encoder because it moves encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware. That does not make encoding free: the GPU may already be busy rendering a game, and results depend on the PC and workload. Compare the available hardware encoder with a software encoder based on CPU headroom, GPU load, desired output, and the destination’s supported options. If a stream stutters, encoding lags, or the preview struggles, use OBS’s statistics and logs to identify whether the problem is rendering, encoding, or network-related before changing settings. Change one variable at a time and test again. Lowering output demands may help when the machine cannot keep up, but the appropriate adjustment depends on what the observed problem is; do not assume that changing Windows graphics settings or choosing a hardware encoder will solve every cause.

Xbox Game Bar is a straightforward option for recording a gameplay or app clip rather than configuring a multi-source live show. Microsoft documents Win + Alt + R to start or stop a recording and Win + Alt + M to toggle the microphone. Its Xbox Game Bar recording instructions cover capture, but do not establish Game Bar as a replacement for OBS’s scenes, sources, output settings, and live-stream controls.

Windows 11 gaming features that are optional
Automatic Super Resolution
Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is a device- and game-limited upscaling feature, not a general streaming-performance switch. Microsoft lists eligible Copilot+ PC processor families and a supported handheld use case, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, compatible display resolutions, current drivers, and DirectX and game-format restrictions. Check Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution information to see whether a particular device and game qualify; eligibility does not establish that it will improve a stream.
Xbox mode
Microsoft says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. Its description of limiting background processes is for gaming handhelds. Troubleshoot common Windows 11 streaming problems
