A single cleanmgr command may surface cleanup options or estimate files eligible for removal, but that does not prove it recovered more space than Storage Sense over a month. The result depends on the command’s switches and saved profile, Storage Sense’s schedule and category settings, and what was actually measured. Microsoft documents overlapping functions, not a universal winner.

What the command can establish

Windows 11 documents cleanmgr, also called Disk Cleanup, as a command-line utility. Its options can open a cleanup settings dialog, run a saved profile, or use default settings. The exact command matters: “I ran one command” does not reveal which categories were selected or whether the displayed amount was an estimate or space recovered.

Microsoft documents these examples: cleanmgr /sageset:1 opens the settings dialog for profile 1; cleanmgr /sagerun:1 runs that saved profile; and cleanmgr /tuneup:1 combines setting up and running the profile. The profile number identifies the saved selection, so a run with one profile may target different categories than a run with another. Microsoft’s cleanmgr command reference lists the syntax and switches.

The command reference also lists /lowdisk and /verylowdisk, which use default settings; /verylowdisk runs without prompts. The /d option selects a drive, but is not used with /sagerun, which enumerates drives and runs the saved profile against them. The reference also lists /autoclean for automatically deleting files left behind after a Windows upgrade. These options are not interchangeable, so a comparison should record the exact command line rather than call all of them “one command.”

Categories and consequences

Depending on the drive and installation, Disk Cleanup can offer categories such as temporary setup files, downloaded program files, temporary internet files, old Chkdsk files, Recycle Bin contents, temporary files, offline files, and content-index catalog files. Microsoft says the Windows installation drive exposes all listed options; other drives may show fewer. The list is not a promise that every category will be available or contain reclaimable data on every PC.

Review selections before deleting. Emptying the Recycle Bin permanently removes items already deleted by the user. Temporary or cached files may be recreated, while other categories may affect data the user expects to retain. A displayed eligible amount is not proof that every selected file is harmless or that the full estimate will become available space.

How Storage Sense differs

Storage Sense is Windows’ automated cleanup feature. Microsoft describes it as overlapping with Disk Cleanup, but the distinction is chiefly how cleanup is controlled: Disk Cleanup can be run with a command and saved profile; Storage Sense can act automatically according to configured triggers, categories, and retention thresholds. Microsoft calls it “a modern, automated disk cleanup feature introduced in Windows 10 and enhanced in later versions.” The statement describes the feature, not a performance comparison.

Storage Sense can remove user temporary files, manage Downloads and Recycle Bin contents according to thresholds, and offload qualifying cloud-backed content while retaining it in the cloud. Offloading is not the same as permanently deleting a file. Its cadence can be set to run when disk space is low (the documented default), or daily, weekly, or monthly, subject to configuration and policy. Therefore, “all month” does not identify how often it ran or what it was allowed to remove. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense configuration documentation for the settings.

How to make a fair comparison

To substantiate a device-specific result, compare actual free-space changes on the same drive—not just the size Disk Cleanup says it can remove.

  1. Record the PC and volume. Note the Windows 11 version or build, drive letter, and the date and time of each run.
  2. Capture the Disk Cleanup method. Save the full command line, including switches and profile number. Record the selected categories and any displayed estimate. Distinguish that estimate from completed deletion.
  3. Record Storage Sense settings. Note whether it was enabled, its cadence, and the enabled categories and retention thresholds during the period being compared.
  4. Measure the same drive. Record free space immediately before and after each cleanup. If comparing a month of Storage Sense activity, preserve measurements across the interval rather than relying on a remembered total.
  5. Account for other storage changes. Keep elapsed time visible and note Windows updates, downloads, app installs, and other activity that could change free space between measurements.

Those checks separate two different claims: that a tool identified files eligible for cleanup, and that it actually freed a measured amount of disk space. Without the command, settings, and before-and-after readings, the defensible conclusion is only that one run surfaced or estimated cleanup under that PC’s conditions. It does not establish that Storage Sense missed the same files, that all of them were safe to remove, or that Disk Cleanup generally recovers more.

Which one should you use?

  • Use Disk Cleanup when you want to review available cleanup categories and run a selected profile on demand. Check the selections, especially Recycle Bin contents.
  • Use Storage Sense when you want recurring cleanup governed by its schedule and retention controls, including its cloud-content offloading options.
  • Use both only with settings in mind. Their functions overlap, and a saved Disk Cleanup profile and Storage Sense can target different categories or act at different times. Neither is guaranteed to remove more in every configuration.
