To get back to the normal Windows 11 desktop, first check what has changed: show the desktop if open apps cover it, restore hidden icons separately, switch back from another virtual desktop, or exit Xbox mode. On a 2-in-1, Windows 11 has no manual Tablet mode toggle; its touch layout responds to the device’s keyboard and form factor.
Start with what you see
- Open apps cover the wallpaper: use the taskbar’s Show desktop area.
- The wallpaper is visible, but icons are gone: turn desktop icons back on.
- The taskbar is missing: check whether it is set to hide automatically.
- The layout changed on a 2-in-1: check the keyboard attachment and device position.
- You see a full-screen gaming interface: exit Xbox mode.
- Your apps and wallpaper seem unfamiliar: use Task View to check whether you are on another virtual desktop.
Open apps are covering the desktop
Select the small Show desktop area at the far end of the taskbar. Windows minimizes the open windows so you can see the desktop; select the same area again to restore those windows.
If the Show desktop area is unavailable or does not work, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and turn on Select the far corner of the taskbar to show the desktop.

Right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, and make sure Show desktop icons is checked. This setting controls the desktop icons; it is separate from minimizing open windows.

If only built-in icons such as This PC or Recycle Bin are missing, right-click the desktop and open Personalize > Themes > Desktop icon settings. Select the icons you want, then apply the change.
You may be on another virtual desktop
Press Windows key+Tab to open Task View, then choose the desktop or window you want. Task View also opens from its taskbar button when that button is shown. It lets you navigate both open windows and multiple virtual desktops, which helps when the desktop looks different because you switched workspaces.
A 2-in-1 has a touch-friendly layout or taskbar
Windows 11 does not provide a manual Tablet mode switch. On supported touch-capable devices, Windows adapts when it detects that a keyboard has been detached or the device has been converted to tablet form; it adapts back when a keyboard is attached or the device returns to laptop form. Reattach the keyboard or return the device to laptop form if you want the laptop layout again.

On a 2-in-1 with a tablet-optimized taskbar, the taskbar can appear collapsed. Swipe up from the bottom edge to expand it. You can change the touch-optimization setting in Taskbar settings.
The taskbar is missing
Windows may be hiding the taskbar automatically. Move the pointer to, or touch, the bottom edge of the screen to reveal it. If the device is using a touch-optimized taskbar, swipe up from the bottom edge to expand its collapsed state.
The screen shows a full-screen gaming interface
Xbox mode is a separate gaming experience. Microsoft documents it for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later on supported devices and in supported markets. Press Win+F11 to exit, or use Game Bar settings or Task View to return to the Windows desktop. On a touch device, swipe up from the bottom to open Task View.

These steps address common Windows 11 desktop, taskbar, virtual desktop, touch-layout, and Xbox mode situations. They do not establish a universal fix for every display state. If the computer is running third-party kiosk or shell software, the interface may be controlled by that software rather than the standard Windows desktop.
