To change what opens a file or link in Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps and update that specific association. Microsoft’s documented steps do not include a single control to restore every default app setting to “recommended” values.
Change a default app for a file or link type
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the file extension or link type you want to change, such as
.txt, and select it. - Choose the app you want Windows to use for that type.
- Repeat for each other file or link type that needs a different default.
Microsoft’s instructions for changing default apps describe changing associations individually, rather than resetting all of them at once.
Change defaults from an app’s associations
You can also open Settings > Apps > Default apps, select an app, and change the file types and link types associated with it. This is useful when you know which app should handle a particular type and want to review its listed associations.
What the other Windows reset options do

App-specific Repair and Reset
For some installed apps, Windows provides Repair and, if needed, Reset in that app’s Advanced options. These controls apply to the selected app, not to all system-wide file and link defaults. See Microsoft’s guidance on repairing apps and programs.

Reset this PC
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows. Depending on the option selected, it can remove apps and settings, so it is a much broader recovery step than changing a default app association. Back up important files before starting. Microsoft explains the available recovery options in its Windows recovery guidance.
“Recommended” app settings are separate
Windows also has app-source choices under Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings, including options about where apps can be obtained and whether Windows shows recommendations or warnings. These settings are separate from Default apps; changing them does not restore file or link associations. Microsoft describes these choices in its app recommendation settings guidance.

Choose the narrowest fix
- If one file extension or link opens in the wrong app, change that association in Default apps.
- If an app itself is malfunctioning, check its Advanced options for Repair or Reset, if available.
- Use Reset this PC only for broader Windows recovery, not as a routine fix for a single default.
