When Bluetooth fails on Windows 11, the cause is usually one of five things: the PC has no Bluetooth radio, Bluetooth is switched off, the accessory is not ready to pair, an old pairing record is getting in the way, or the Bluetooth driver is outdated or incompatible. The eight checks below follow Microsoft’s support order, starting with quick settings and peripheral checks and moving toward driver and hardware steps. Find the symptom in the table first, begin at the suggested step, and stop as soon as the device connects.
Match your symptom to the right starting point
Microsoft’s support pages name several common Bluetooth symptoms. The table maps each one to the check most likely to matter first. If the first step does not help, continue in numerical order.
| What you see | Most likely area | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| No Bluetooth toggle, or the toggle is missing or greyed out | Hardware support, a disabled radio, or the adapter driver | Step 2, then step 8 |
| The device does not appear in the list of available devices | Peripheral readiness or the discovery setting | Steps 4 and 5 |
| Pairing fails, or the accessory will not reconnect | A saved pairing record that no longer matches the device | Step 6 |
| Bluetooth disappeared after a Windows upgrade or update | Driver compatibility | Step 7 |
| Bluetooth connects but there is no sound | Microsoft’s “Bluetooth connected but no sound” issue category | Step 1, then step 6 |
| Connection is sluggish or drops out | Peripheral position or USB interference | Step 4 |
The eight fixes, in order
1. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help
Microsoft tells Windows 11 users to start with the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open the Start menu, search for Get Help, and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. Follow the on-screen prompts. If the problem persists, move on to the remaining steps, which address the specific symptom.

Some PCs ship without Bluetooth hardware, so a missing toggle is not always a settings problem. Check the manufacturer’s product specifications for your exact model and look for Bluetooth listed among its features. On some laptops, a physical wireless or Bluetooth switch controls the radio, so confirm that it is in the on position. If the specifications do not list Bluetooth, go to the adapter section below. Do not keep changing settings for a radio the computer does not have.

3. Turn Bluetooth on and Airplane mode off
Open the taskbar Quick Settings panel and check that the Bluetooth tile is on. You can also go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Airplane mode turns off wireless radios, so confirm it is off under Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode. Microsoft also suggests turning Bluetooth off, waiting a few seconds, and turning it back on. This clears a stalled radio state in many cases, and it takes less than a minute.
4. Check the peripheral and its surroundings
Most connection failures are on the accessory side. Confirm that the device is:

Microsoft also notes that unshielded USB devices plugged into USB 3.0 ports can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. If the connection is sluggish, move the peripheral away from nearby USB devices, or move any USB devices away from the PC’s USB 3.0 ports. This is a documented possibility rather than a guaranteed cause, so test it by changing one thing at a time.

5. Set discovery to Advanced if the device is not listed
If your accessory does not appear when you add a device, Microsoft says the Bluetooth device discovery setting may need to change to Advanced so that Windows displays all types of Bluetooth devices. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and look for the discovery option. Then start the device’s pairing mode again and refresh the list.

6. Remove the device and pair it again
A saved pairing record that no longer matches the accessory can prevent reconnection even when everything else is working. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, select the problem device and choose Remove device. Put the accessory into pairing mode, select Add device on the same page, and pair it again. Removing and re-adding the device is one of the most frequently recommended connection fixes in Microsoft’s guidance, and it usually takes only a few minutes.
7. Update the Bluetooth driver
Microsoft’s support guidance states: “An outdated or incompatible driver is one of the most common causes of Bluetooth connection problems.” Driver compatibility can also break after a Windows upgrade or update. To check, press Windows + X, choose Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click your adapter, and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers. If Windows cannot find a newer driver, Microsoft directs you to the PC manufacturer’s website to download the driver for your exact model. Use the manufacturer’s support pages rather than third-party driver-update tools.

When a USB Bluetooth adapter is the right answer
A USB Bluetooth adapter only makes sense if your PC does not have Bluetooth capability, which you confirmed in step 2. It adds a radio to a computer that lacks one. It does not repair an existing radio, a stale pairing record, or a damaged driver, so buying one for those problems is wasted money. Before you buy, check the following:
- Windows 11 support is stated on the product’s manufacturer page, not just on a retailer listing.
- The exact hardware revision matches the driver listing you are reading. TP-Link’s UB500, for example, has separate support listings for each hardware revision. TP-Link’s support page lists a Windows 11 driver for UB500 V3.60.
- Driver availability depends on your region. TP-Link states that hardware versions and availability vary by region, so check the manufacturer’s regional support page before buying.
- Your PC does not already have an enabled Bluetooth radio, since a second adapter can conflict with the built-in one.
Sources do not establish a tested ranking of adapter brands, so choose based on the Windows 11 support and revision checks above.
