When a Bluetooth accessory does not appear in Windows 11, the fault is usually in one of three places: the accessory is not advertising itself, the PC’s Bluetooth radio is switched off or not responding, or discovery is filtering the device out. Work through these in that order. Most cases are resolved by the first two checks, which cost nothing. Driver and hardware steps only make sense once the symptoms point to the PC itself.

Identify which side is failing

Before changing any setting, decide which symptom you have. The fix depends on it.

Symptom Most likely side Start with
Accessory never appears in the Bluetooth devices list Accessory not in pairing mode, out of range or low on battery; or discovery filter hiding it Accessory checks, then set discovery to Advanced
Bluetooth toggle or icon is missing or grayed out PC Bluetooth hardware, driver or firmware Radio state, then the PC hardware branch
Accessory appears but will not connect Pairing record or connection state Remove and re-add, then restart

If the device appears in the list, skip ahead to the section on pairing and connection. Repeatedly refreshing a list that does not show the device will not change the result.

Step 1: Check the accessory

Most “not showing up” reports are caused by the accessory rather than Windows. Microsoft’s guidance is that the target device must be powered on and discoverable or in pairing mode, and that the method for doing this depends on the device.

  1. Charge the accessory or replace its batteries. A low battery can stop it from advertising reliably.
  2. Bring it within a few feet of the PC during the search.
  3. Put it into pairing or discoverable mode using the manufacturer’s instructions. A light that blinks in a specific pattern is usually the indicator, but the pattern differs by product, so check the manual or the manufacturer’s support page for the model.
  4. Turn the accessory off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. Microsoft lists this as a reasonable check.

Step 2: Confirm Windows 11 Bluetooth is on

Next, confirm the PC’s radio is actually active. Open Quick Settings from the taskbar, check that Airplane mode is off, and make sure the Bluetooth tile is turned on. The same control is available at Settings > Bluetooth & devices.

If Bluetooth shows as on but the accessory is still missing, turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. Microsoft also notes that an unshielded USB device plugged into a USB 3.0 port can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth connections. If the accessory is in a nearby USB 3.0 port, try a different port or move the USB device farther from the accessory.

Step 3: Change device discovery to Advanced

Windows filters the device list by default. Microsoft describes the default setting as showing common Bluetooth devices, while the Advanced setting displays all device types. A less common accessory, such as some keyboards, controllers or specialty audio devices, can be hidden by the default filter.

Step 4: Determine whether the PC has working Bluetooth

Some PCs have no Bluetooth at all. Microsoft Support states, “Some devices don’t have Bluetooth.” If you bought a new PC, check its product specifications for Bluetooth before troubleshooting further. If the specifications list Bluetooth and the toggle is still missing, the adapter itself needs attention.

If the Bluetooth toggle is missing or grayed out

Microsoft says that a missing or grayed-out Bluetooth control can mean the PC’s Bluetooth hardware has encountered an error. Work through the following in order:

TP-Link USB Bluetooth Adapter for PC, Bluetooth 4.0 Dongle Receiver
  • NOTE: The item is compatible with windows 11/10/8.1/8/7/XP. However, on the box there is limited space so the manufacturer do not list all of the versions and just list the most recent versions of windows

  • Reliability – enable wireless communication with Bluetooth-enabled computers, printers, phones and headsets. Utilize Bluetooth low energy) technology for energy-saving wireless connectivity. Operating Temperature-0℃-40℃ (32℉ -104℉)
  1. Run the Windows 11 Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
  2. Perform a full shutdown rather than a restart. Hold Shift while selecting Start > Power > Shut down. Wait one minute after the PC powers off, then turn it on again.
  3. Open Device Manager and expand Bluetooth. Confirm that the adapter is listed. Right-click it and choose to update the driver.
  4. Check Windows Update for optional driver and firmware updates. Then check the PC manufacturer’s support site for model-specific drivers or firmware, since availability depends on the PC model.
  5. If the toggle is still missing or gray after these steps, contact the PC manufacturer. A persistent hardware error is a support matter rather than a settings issue.

If the PC has no Bluetooth adapter

If the PC has no Bluetooth hardware at all, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth through a free USB port. This is a workaround for a PC without the feature, not a fix for a PC that already has an adapter. An adapter does not resolve every discovery problem, so confirm your PC’s specifications before buying one. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish criteria for choosing a specific adapter model or confirm compatibility with any particular one, so check the adapter’s own compatibility information against your Windows 11 version and PC.

Step 5: When the device appears but will not pair

If the accessory shows in the list but connection fails, you have a pairing problem rather than a discovery problem. Microsoft’s pairing instructions state, “The way to make the Bluetooth device discoverable depends on the device,” so confirm the accessory is still in pairing mode before each attempt.

  1. Confirm the accessory is in pairing mode, within range and charged.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, select the accessory, and remove it.
  3. Put the accessory back into pairing mode and add it again with Add device.
  4. Turn Bluetooth off and on again, check Windows Update, and restart the PC if the connection still fails.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek help

  • The accessory works with another phone or PC, but not with this one. This points to the PC’s Bluetooth side.
  • The accessory does not appear on any device, even after the manufacturer’s reset procedure. This points to the accessory.
  • The Bluetooth toggle remains missing or gray after the shutdown, troubleshooter and driver steps. Contact the PC manufacturer.

Menu labels and driver availability can change with Windows feature updates and between PC models, so if a label on your screen differs from the one above, look for the closest matching Bluetooth setting in Settings.
