To manage apps in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps, then choose the page for the task: Installed apps to find or remove an app, Default apps to choose what opens a file or link, and Startup to control apps that launch when you sign in. Available actions vary by app and Windows version.
Where are app settings in Windows 11?
Open Start > Settings > Apps. The Apps section brings together controls for installed apps, default handlers, startup behavior, and app-source recommendations. Choose the relevant page rather than expecting one set of controls to apply to every app. Microsoft’s overview of Windows Settings describes Apps as a place to view, install, uninstall, and update apps and configure defaults and startup actions.
How do I find or uninstall an app?
Find installed apps
Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps to view the apps Windows lists as installed. You can also browse the app list in Start. If you are unsure whether a program is installed, Microsoft’s guide to checking for installed apps and programs covers these routes.
Choose an uninstall route
- In Installed apps, locate the app and open its More options menu (the three-dot button).
- Select Uninstall if that option appears, then follow any prompts from Windows or the app’s own uninstaller.
- If the app is listed in Start, you can also right-click it and choose Uninstall.
- If neither route offers removal, check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features for a traditional desktop program.
Removal options depend on the app. Some built-in Windows apps cannot be uninstalled, and Microsoft notes that “Some apps can’t be uninstalled from the Settings app right now.” See Microsoft Support’s uninstall guidance for the routes it documents.

How do I repair or reset an app?
If an app is malfunctioning, look for its recovery controls before removing it. Not every app provides these options.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app, open More options, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair first, if offered. This is the less disruptive option to try before resetting.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not resolve the problem, consider Reset if the app provides it.
Reset can affect app data or settings. Check the app’s own guidance before using it if you need to preserve local information. Microsoft explains the available recovery options in its Repair apps and programs in Windows article.

How do I change which app opens a file or link?
Open Settings > Apps > Default apps. You can search for a file extension, such as a document or image type, or a protocol used for a link, then select the app you want Windows to use. Alternatively, choose an app on that page to review the file and link types it supports and change its associations. Microsoft provides steps in Change Default Apps in Windows.
How do I stop apps from opening at startup?
Use the route that matches how much information you need. Settings provides a straightforward on/off control; Task Manager adds startup-impact information for registered startup apps.

If an app is missing from both lists, it may be configured through a per-user or all-users Startup folder in File Explorer. Microsoft documents this and registry locations in Configure Startup applications in Windows. The registry route can have unintended effects, so do not edit it casually.

The choices can control whether Windows allows apps from anywhere, shows a warning, recommends Microsoft Store alternatives, or restricts installation to the Store.
