No—not necessarily. To enroll an eligible personal Windows 10 PC in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU), you need to authenticate with an administrator Microsoft account, and a local-account user may be prompted to sign in with one. Microsoft’s enrollment guidance does not say that this permanently replaces the local Windows sign-in. Account conversion is a separate Settings action, and Microsoft documents switching between account types.
What the ESU Microsoft-account prompt means
Microsoft says the account used for ESU must be an administrator account, cannot be a child account, and is associated with the ESU license. Its page states: “The ESU license will be associated with the Microsoft account used to enroll.” A user who normally signs in to Windows with a local account may be asked to sign in with a Microsoft account during enrollment.

That enrollment prompt and changing the account Windows uses for everyday sign-in are distinct actions. Microsoft’s enrollment instructions do not establish that you must permanently convert your Windows sign-in to a Microsoft account. Read the prompt on your PC carefully; do not assume that authentication for enrollment has changed your account type.
Local account vs. Microsoft account
A local account belongs to one device and can be used to sign in without an internet connection; it is not connected to Microsoft cloud services. A Microsoft account can connect Windows to Microsoft services and allow settings and files to sync across devices. Microsoft documents changing account types through Settings, separately from ESU enrollment.

Switch account types in Settings
- To change a local account to a Microsoft account, open Settings > Accounts > Your info and select Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
- To change a Microsoft account back to a local account, return to Settings > Accounts > Your info and select Sign in with a local account instead.
Microsoft describes this as an account-type change, not as a required step in its ESU enrollment instructions. Its account guidance says, “You can use the Settings app to switch your local account to a Microsoft account.”
Who can use consumer Windows 10 ESU
Consumer ESU is for eligible PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2 Home, Professional, Pro Education, or Workstations. The PC needs the latest Windows update and Microsoft’s ESU licensing preparation package installed. The Microsoft account used to enroll must have administrator privileges and cannot be a child account.
The consumer offer is not intended for commercial use. Microsoft says enrollment is unavailable for kiosk devices, devices joined to an Active Directory domain or Microsoft Entra, devices enrolled in MDM, and devices that already have an ESU license. Microsoft Entra-registered devices can use consumer ESU. If a consumer-enrolled PC later enters one of the listed commercial scenarios, enrollment is suspended until it is no longer used as a commercial device.
Install the preparation package before enrolling
Microsoft’s support page, originally published September 8, 2026, identifies KB5126256 as the ESU licensing preparation package at that time. Its instructions say to install Windows 10 version 22H2 with a security update released on or after October 14, 2025 first, then install KB5126256. The package prepares licensing and enrollment components; installing it alone does not enroll the PC or deliver ESU updates. Check Microsoft’s current instructions for a later replacement or superseding package.

How to enroll in ESU
- On a qualifying PC, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and look for the ESU enrollment link.
- Select Enroll now and follow the on-screen prompts. If you use a local account, you may be asked to sign in with a Microsoft account that has administrator privileges.
- Review the account and enrollment details shown on screen before completing the process. Microsoft associates the ESU license with the Microsoft account used to enroll.
Microsoft says one ESU license can be used on up to 10 devices, provided each meets the requirements. Enrollment can be completed through October 12, 2027, but Microsoft cautions that an unenrolled PC remains more vulnerable until it is enrolled.

What ESU covers—and what it does not
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A PC still runs after that date, but without ESU it no longer receives regular security updates, feature updates, or technical support from Microsoft.
For eligible enrolled devices, ESU provides critical and important security updates through Windows Update as Microsoft makes them available, with coverage through October 12, 2027. It does not include feature upgrades, all bug fixes, product enhancements, or technical support. Enrolling also does not prevent a later upgrade to Windows 11 if the PC meets the hardware requirements.
US enrollment options and cost
Microsoft’s consumer ESU page, accessed September 27, 2026, listed these US routes. Microsoft says options and timing may differ by region, including in the EEA; check the offer shown for your location rather than assuming US terms apply everywhere.
| Enrollment route | US terms listed by Microsoft |
|---|---|
| Sync PC settings | No additional cost |
| Redeem Microsoft Rewards points | 1,000 points |
| Purchase ESU | US$30 one-time, plus applicable tax |
These are Microsoft’s published US program terms as of September 27, 2026; they are not a guarantee of identical pricing or availability elsewhere.
Quick Recap
Choose between ESU and moving on from Windows 10
- Stay on the PC temporarily: ESU is the bridge for an eligible device when you need more time, but it only supplies the specified security updates.
- Upgrade the existing PC: Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs that meet Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements may upgrade to Windows 11 for free.
- Replace the PC: If the device cannot upgrade, or you have decided to replace it, Microsoft lists buying a Windows 11 PC as another option. Buying new hardware is not a prerequisite for ESU.
