Winamp announced on September 24, 2024 that source code for its Windows player would be made available to developers through GitHub. That announcement did not transfer ownership of Winamp, and the displayed Winamp Collaborative License (WCL) 1.0.1 allows private modification but prohibits distributing modified versions.
What Winamp actually announced
Winamp’s announcement concerned the source of its Windows player. The company presented the release as a way for developers to help maintain the software and develop features while Winamp continued to control the official product.
Winamp CEO Alexandre Saboundjian said: “Winamp will remain the owner of the software and will decide on the innovations made in the official version.” In practical terms, developers may suggest or contribute changes, but Winamp retains authority over what enters an official release.
The announcement date was September 24, 2024. A separate September 2024 announcement from Llama Group described a plan for two major official versions per year; that was a stated plan, not confirmation that the schedule was later met.

Is the code unrestricted open source?
Not according to the displayed WCL 1.0.1 text. Source availability and open-source permissions are not the same thing. The license shown with a repository copy grants access to inspect the code and make private modifications, while restricting redistribution.

Can you download the Winamp source code?
A GitHub search result describes a repository containing Winamp source and build instructions, so a source copy has been publicly discoverable. However, that result is under a user account and does not establish that the account is Winamp’s current official source host or that it remains the canonical repository.
Use the repository’s own license and ownership information to verify what you are downloading. Do not assume that a similarly named mirror is official, current, or authorized merely because it appears in GitHub search.

Can you make and share your own Winamp build?
You can study the code and create a private modified build under the permissions shown in WCL 1.0.1. The same displayed terms prohibit distributing modified versions, which means you should not publish a fork, upload modified source, or share a modified binary without separate permission from the rights holder.
Winamp’s control over the official product also means that a developer contribution is not an independent release channel. Even if a change is accepted, the official maintainers decide whether and when it appears in Winamp.

What this release means for different readers
For users
The announcement does not by itself promise a new official feature, a supported community fork, or a replacement for the existing Windows player. Official changes remain subject to Winamp’s release decisions.
For developers
You can inspect the implementation, experiment privately, and review the build structure. Before sharing code or binaries, check the exact WCL version and any accompanying terms, because the displayed license restricts redistribution.
For organizations
