Sometimes—but not automatically in every situation. Your phone can register on a partner network only if your carrier allows roaming there, your plan and account are eligible, your phone supports that network, and a usable signal is available. Turning on roaming permits certain uses of another carrier’s network; it does not guarantee service or make it free.
What has to be true for partner-network service to work?
Your phone’s network-selection behavior and your right to use a network are separate matters. A handset may search for networks it can use, but a connection depends on several conditions being met:
- A partner is reachable: There must be usable coverage where you are.
- Your carrier permits access: It needs an applicable roaming arrangement or other access to that network in that location.
- Your line and plan qualify: The account must be active, and the plan must allow the relevant roaming service.
- Your phone is compatible: It must support the visited network’s technology and bands.
- The relevant settings allow it: Roaming controls may need to be enabled for the service you want, especially data.
Google describes Pixel roaming as allowing data over other carriers’ networks outside your carrier’s own coverage. The network options available on Pixel depend on the phone and Android version, while iPhone settings can vary by model, carrier, and region. Your phone’s roaming switch cannot show whether your carrier has a partner agreement for your location or whether your plan includes it. Google Pixel roaming and mobile-network settings; Apple: About cellular data roaming options
Do not assume a seamless handoff or uninterrupted service. In the United States, an FCC order from 2007 describes automatic-roaming obligations in particular circumstances; it does not promise that every carrier will provide roaming in every location. FCC 07-143, paragraph 48

Will enabling roaming cost extra?
It may. Charges and allowances depend on your carrier, plan, destination, and whether you use voice, text, or data. Some plans limit or exclude particular services. Apple advises customers to check their carrier’s roaming plans and warns that roaming can bring fees or higher rates. Before relying on partner coverage, ask your carrier whether domestic or international roaming is enabled for your line, which services are included, and what charges or limits apply. Apple: About cellular data roaming options; Apple: Use eSIM while traveling internationally
Where are the roaming settings?
Settings control whether certain roaming uses are allowed; they do not establish eligibility with the carrier. Menu names and options can vary by model, OS version, carrier, region, and SIM setup.

What to check when you have no service
Start by reading the status indicator: No Service, Searching, and SOS do not mean the same thing. On an iPhone, SOS or SOS only means the phone is not connected to its cellular network; Apple says emergency calls through other carrier networks may still be possible in Australia, Canada, and the United States. That is not ordinary roaming service. Apple: If you see SOS, No Service, or Searching on your iPhone
- Check the cellular line. Make sure the line is enabled and, on a dual-SIM or eSIM phone, that the correct line is selected. Check that the settings for the service you need, including data roaming where appropriate, match your carrier’s instructions.
- Prompt a fresh network search. On iPhone, turn Airplane Mode on, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it off. Apple’s general No Service guidance recommends at least 15 seconds; follow the roaming-specific timing when troubleshooting travel roaming. Apple roaming troubleshooting; Apple No Service troubleshooting
- Check coverage and account eligibility. Look for local coverage or an outage, then confirm the account is in good standing and the plan permits roaming in that location.
- Check activation and device restrictions. Confirm that the SIM or eSIM is activated, carrier settings are current, and the device or line is not blocked from service.
- Ask the carrier targeted questions. Ask whether roaming is enabled for your line at your location, which partner network to use, whether voice and data are both supported, and what fees or limits apply.
On Pixel, inspect the selected SIM’s mobile-network settings and roaming control. If the phone still cannot register after the checks above, the carrier can confirm whether a partner network is available to your line. What if you need service while away?
Compare options based on the coverage you need, plan eligibility, voice and data support, total cost and allowances, phone compatibility, and how quickly you can activate service.
- Your carrier’s roaming service: Convenient if your line and plan qualify, but verify the destination, included services, and charges with the carrier.
- A travel eSIM: An alternative for supported phones and destinations. Check which networks it uses and whether it provides data only or also supports voice and text; verify the provider’s terms for your destination. Apple: Use eSIM while traveling internationally
- Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi calling or internet access can help where available, but it is not cellular partner roaming and depends on your device, service, and network access.
Do not confuse cellular roaming with automatic Wi-Fi connection. For example, Google Fi’s Wi-Fi Auto Connect+ can connect to selected secure Wi-Fi networks in covered areas; it does not provide access to a cellular partner network. Google Fi: Connect to Wi-Fi automatically
