No universal July deadline for deleting customers’ photos is established by Apple’s current guidance. Apple’s U.S. iCloud terms instead say that if an account exceeds its storage limit, Apple may delete data above that limit after giving 30 days’ notice. That is a conditional risk, not a scheduled purge for everyone.
Will Apple delete your photos in July?
Apple’s U.S. iCloud Terms & Conditions, last revised September 14, 2026, do not announce a universal July photo-deletion date. They say Apple may delete data exceeding an account’s storage limit after 30 days’ notice if the account remains over that limit. Read the Apple iCloud Terms & Conditions for the terms that apply to your account and region.
The July warning may be confused with My Photo Stream, a legacy Apple feature distinct from iCloud Photos. Apple Developer Documentation describes My Photo Stream as a personal iCloud Photo Stream album and notes that its setting is off by default when iCloud Photo Library is enabled. The official Apple sources available here do not establish a current July shutdown date for that feature, either. Do not assume a My Photo Stream reference means your iCloud Photos library is scheduled for deletion.

Check whether your iPhone photos have finished syncing
A photo visible on your iPhone is not necessarily uploaded to iCloud. Apple says that full iCloud storage pauses Photos syncing, so check the library’s status before relying on cloud access.

Apple’s current instructions for checking library status are in Apple Support’s guidance on iCloud Photos; labels may vary by operating-system version.
Make a separate copy of your originals
iCloud Photos is a sync service, not an independent backup: changes, including deletions, sync across devices using it. Apple also says that when iCloud Photos is enabled, the photo library is not included in iCloud Backup. Apple’s iCloud terms put responsibility for backing up important content on the user, stating: “You are responsible for backing up, to your own computer or other device, any important documents, images or other Content that you store or access via the Service.”

Download the originals to a computer or a separate storage device, such as an external drive. Use Apple’s instructions for downloading copies of photos and videos, and verify that files open and the copy contains the images you expect before deleting anything or relying on the copy. A second location under your control is more useful for recovery than another device that merely syncs with the same Apple Account.

Deleting a photo while iCloud Photos is in use affects other devices using the service; it is not just a local removal from the device where you tapped delete. Accidentally deleted items can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days, after which Apple says they are permanently deleted. That temporary recovery window is not a durable backup.

Before turning off iCloud Photos account-wide, download the originals. Apple’s instructions explain that disabling the feature can lead to photos being removed from iCloud after 30 days, with an option to undo or recover during that period. Follow Apple’s current instructions for turning off iCloud Photos and check the prompts carefully; menu labels can differ by OS version.

Apple’s U.S. iCloud terms describe an included allocation of 5 GB for an account, or 1 GB for web-only accounts. Those figures are the allocations stated in the terms, not a July deletion threshold. The stated deletion condition is that the account is over its storage limit and Apple gives 30 days’ notice before it may delete data exceeding that limit.
