Possibly—but a box that powers on or connects to your TV may still lack working channels, recording, or Sky subscription access. The answer depends on the exact box model, its condition, and whether Sky still supports the services tied to your account. Start by identifying the model, then check whether the problem is power, the TV connection, software, or account authorization.
Find the Sky box model before deciding what still works
Sky UK’s model guidance identifies Sky HD boxes as models 4F70XXX or DRX595, and Sky+HD boxes as 4F31XX, DRX890, or DRX895. To find your model on a Sky+ box, go to Services → Settings → Details/System Details. The precise label can vary by box generation.
Sky’s guidance lists those model families for a Sky Q upgrade, but that is not confirmation that a particular account qualifies or what an upgrade would cost. It also says the named models are not HDR-capable. Check Sky’s model and upgrade guidance for current information.

Separate basic operation from access to services. A box may power up and display a picture while some or all of its other functions are unavailable.

- Power: Does the box turn on and respond to its controls?
- TV connection: Can it send a picture and sound to the television through a compatible connection?
- Channels: Can it receive the channels you expect, including any free-to-air satellite channels available to that setup?
- Sky services: Does the account and viewing card, if used, still authorize the paid channels and features?
- Recording and connected features: Do recording and on-demand functions work on this model and service?
A working HDMI connection only addresses the physical link between a box and a compatible TV. It cannot restore a subscription, authorize a viewing card, bring back a channel, or extend provider support. Check the ports on both devices before buying a cable; Sky’s connection help covers box-to-TV connection issues.
Troubleshoot the fault before replacing the box
- Record the model. On a Sky+ box, open Services → Settings → Details/System Details and note the model and software details before following instructions.
- Check power and TV connections. Confirm the box is receiving mains power, then check that its cable is firmly connected to a compatible input on the TV. Use the instructions for your box generation; the Sky+HD user guide explains its connections and power states.
- Restart or update using the instructions for your model. Sky’s box troubleshooting guidance covers reset and software-update steps. Follow the procedure for the relevant generation rather than assuming instructions are interchangeable.
- Contact Sky if the box still fails or channels are missing. Give Sky the model and account details. A restart or reset cannot establish whether an account is active or a viewing card is currently authorized.
Software updates depend on the box generation
Sky says Sky+HD and Sky Q boxes update automatically; a manual update is mainly needed when a box has been switched off for a long time. See Sky’s software-update instructions for the relevant box. That guidance does not establish the update status of every older Sky+ model, so do not assume an older box can receive the same update or support.

Keep the box, upgrade, or move to another Sky product?
The right option depends on what has failed and what equipment and features your household needs. Sky’s cited guidance supports a Sky Q upgrade listing for the specified Sky HD and Sky+HD model families, but household-specific eligibility and current terms need to be confirmed with Sky.
- Keep and troubleshoot it if the issue appears to be power, cabling, or a software problem and the services you need remain available to your account.
- Ask about Sky Q if your model is one of the listed families and you want to explore the provider’s upgrade route. The model listing alone does not guarantee eligibility or a particular price.
- Consider an internet-delivered product only after checking how its delivery method and equipment fit your broadband, recording, and multi-room needs. The reviewed guidance does not establish household-specific requirements or current package terms for Sky Glass or Sky Stream; confirm those with Sky.
What changes if you activate Sky Glass?
Sky says that after Sky Glass activation, old Sky equipment—including the box, remotes, and multi-screen mini boxes—no longer works. If you have Sky Q, Sky instructs customers to keep that equipment for 31 days while waiting for return details. Confirm the current process and any return requirements with Sky before changing equipment; see its Sky Glass equipment guidance.

What Sky’s model guidance cannot confirm
Sky’s UK support information is model-level guidance, not a check of an individual box or account. It does not determine whether a particular subscription is active, whether a viewing card is paired or authorized, whether a specific channel remains available, or whether a second-hand box can be activated. For those questions, give Sky the model and account details and ask about the specific service you want to use.
