Will AI replace web developers? Current evidence does not support a definite yes or no. AI can change how web-development work gets done, but its effect depends on the task, the developer, the codebase, and how productivity is measured. Developers who use AI may gain an advantage in some settings; there is no evidence here that they are guaranteed to replace those who do not.

What the productivity studies actually show

Two studies point to different results because they examined different people, tools, tasks, and workplaces. Neither establishes a universal productivity effect or a forecast of job losses.

Study Setting and result What the result does—and does not—show
METR, randomized trial, published July 10, 2025 Experienced open-source developers used early-2025 AI tools on selected issues. They took 19% longer to complete the tested tasks with AI. This is evidence against assuming automatic speedups in that particular setting. It does not show that AI slows every developer, every task, or later tools.
GitHub research with Accenture, published 2024 A vendor-published study examined Copilot in an enterprise setting and reported productivity gains. The findings apply to that study’s participants and setting. They are not an independent guarantee that every team will see the same effect.

The results are not necessarily contradictory. A tool may help with one kind of task and add work in another; participants may have different experience and familiarity with the code; and studies may define productivity differently. A short task experiment also cannot establish the long-term effect on hiring or employment.

Why faster code generation is not the same as faster delivery

An assistant can produce a draft quickly while leaving a developer with time-consuming review, corrections, tests, or rework. To judge whether AI helps, assess the whole change from start to a reliable, maintainable result—not just the time spent generating code.

Measure the full workflow

  • Track time spent prompting, reviewing, correcting, testing, and reworking as well as time spent writing code.
  • Check correctness and maintainability, not just speed or the amount of code produced.
  • Separate task types, such as routine completion, test writing, debugging, work in unfamiliar code, and architectural changes.
  • Account for how well the developer already knows the codebase. Results from experienced open-source maintainers may not carry over to a new developer or another project.
  • Record which assistant and version were used, and when. Capabilities change, so a result from one tool or period does not establish how another will perform.

GitHub’s 2024 survey on AI use by software-development teams reports adoption and perceptions. Survey responses are self-reported, not a controlled measure of whether a team completed work faster or better.

What employment forecasts say—and what they cannot answer

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects software-developer employment to grow 15.8% from 2024 to 2034, an increase of 267,700 jobs. This is a U.S. occupational projection, not a causal estimate of AI’s effect. It neither rules out displacement nor guarantees an individual’s job security, and it does not isolate AI as the reason for the projected change.

Occupational labels matter. “Web developer,” “software developer,” and “computer programmer” are not interchangeable BLS categories. The agency’s outlook for computer programmers differs from its software-developer projection; it discusses automation of repetitive programming tasks and a shift of some higher-skilled work toward software developers. The software-developer forecast therefore should not be read as a direct forecast for every web-development role.

The projection does not settle how AI may affect hiring standards, wages, junior opportunities, team sizes, or job quality. A forecast of overall occupational growth can coexist with changes in which tasks employers value or how teams are staffed.

How developers can assess whether AI gives them an edge

Rather than assume that using AI creates a career advantage, test whether it improves outcomes in the work you actually do. Compare similar tasks with and without assistance, and include the review and rework needed to ship the result.

  1. Choose representative tasks. Include routine work and more complex tasks, such as debugging or changes in unfamiliar code. Do not generalize from one easy example.
  2. Set a baseline. Record completion time and the quality checks the work must pass without AI assistance.
  3. Use a defined tool and workflow. Note the assistant and version, task, and codebase context so the comparison can be interpreted later.
  4. Count all the work. Include prompting, review, testing, corrections, and rework in the assisted result.
  5. Compare outcomes. Look at correctness, maintainability, and total time together. A quick draft that requires extensive repair is not necessarily a productivity gain.
  6. Repeat across tasks. A useful result is specific: it tells you where assistance helps, where it adds overhead, and where human judgment remains essential.

This kind of comparison can show whether AI is useful in a particular workflow. It cannot by itself predict whether a person will keep a job or whether employers will favor one group of developers over another.
