A widescreen format is an image or display shape that is wider relative to its height than traditional 4:3 television. In digital television, 16:9 is the familiar widescreen shape. The ratio describes proportions—not pixel count or physical screen size.
What does widescreen mean?
Widescreen describes a frame or display that is relatively broad compared with its height. The term depends on the medium: digital-TV standards explicitly contrast widescreen 16:9 with traditional 4:3, but 16:9 is not a universal definition for every kind of screen or image. The ITU’s digital television recommendation covers both ratios: ITU-R BT.601.
Aspect ratio, resolution and screen size are different
- Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height. A 16:9 image is 16 units wide for every 9 units high, or about 1.78:1. A 4:3 image is 4 units wide for every 3 units high, or about 1.33:1.
- Resolution is the number of picture samples or pixels. The ITU describes 1920 pixels per line by 1080 lines as a common 16:9 image format; that is one resolution using that shape, not the definition of widescreen. See the ITU’s HDTV explanation.
- Screen size refers to a display’s physical dimensions, commonly described by its diagonal. It does not determine the aspect ratio.
In short, 16:9 is the shape; 1920 × 1080 is one possible pixel grid for that shape. Other resolutions can also use a 16:9 ratio.

| Format | Proportion | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 4:3 | About 1.33:1 | Traditional television shape and a common comparison point for widescreen TV. |
| 16:9 | About 1.78:1 | Widescreen television shape named in ITU digital-TV recommendations. |
The key difference is shape: 16:9 is proportionally wider than 4:3. Neither ratio tells you how many pixels an image contains or how large a display is.

Why widescreen videos can have black bars
If the video and display have different aspect ratios, the entire image cannot fill the screen at its original proportions without an adjustment. The display or production must accommodate the mismatch in one of several ways:
- Leave unused space: show the full image with bars or empty areas where the shapes do not match. Letterboxing is one way to present a wider image within a less-wide frame.
- Crop or pan and scan: fill more of the display by cutting off parts of the image. Reframing may change which parts remain visible.
- Reframe for multiple shapes: compose or adapt the material for different target formats, rather than relying on one framing to fit every screen.
ITU guidance addresses framing and safe areas during the transition between 4:3 and 16:9 broadcasting, while a 1996 SMPTE article explains that a chosen aspect ratio will need an accommodation when shown in another ratio: ITU-R BT.1379; Mark Schubin, “Searching for the Perfect Aspect Ratio,” SMPTE Journal, August 1996.

What producers should keep in frame
When creating 16:9 television material, producers should keep important action and graphics inside the safe areas for the intended format and distribution. ITU-R BT.1848-1 provides 16:9 safe-area guidance for 625-line, 720-line, 1080-line, 2160-line and 4320-line formats. It describes safe areas as regions within the active image intended to keep critical picture elements visible on the majority of home television receivers. See ITU-R BT.1848-1.

Is one aspect ratio best?
No single ratio is established as best for every screen and viewer. A 1996 SMPTE article reported no clear general preference or physiological reason for one moving-image ratio. A separate 2002 study found that preference depended on screen size; about 2:1 was most preferred in the home-environment tests reported by that study. These are findings from particular studies, not universal guidance for modern displays or all viewers. See the SMPTE Journal article and the 2002 study citation.
