Sometimes they can see connection details, but ordinary Wi-Fi access does not automatically reveal everything you do on your phone. HTTPS generally encrypts the contents of your website and app connections, so a Wi-Fi owner usually cannot simply read your searches, messages, or exact pages from that traffic. What a network operator can learn depends on the network, router, and encryption—and someone who has installed monitoring software on your phone is a separate and more serious case.
What can someone see through Wi-Fi?
“Someone” can mean a nearby user on public Wi-Fi, the person who manages a home router, or your internet provider. Their visibility differs. A person with access to your phone may have still different access because monitoring software can collect information directly from the device.
- On an unprotected Wi-Fi network, other users may be able to see online activity, including personal information entered or viewed. The FTC recommends using network encryption. This warning does not mean that users on a properly encrypted Wi-Fi network can automatically read traffic protected by HTTPS. FTC home Wi-Fi security guidance
- A home Wi-Fi administrator may be able to see that a phone is connected and may have access to some network metadata, depending on the router and its settings. The FTC’s guidance does not establish that every ordinary router records a readable history of every page visited.
- An internet provider (ISP) is separate from the owner of your local router. In a 2021 staff report examining six major ISPs, the FTC found that some continued collecting website domain information despite HTTPS. That scoped finding does not show what every ISP or local router can see. FTC staff report on six ISPs
- Someone who can access your phone may be able to monitor information through software installed on the device. That is not ordinary Wi-Fi monitoring.
What HTTPS protects—and what it does not
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your phone and a website. The FTC says most websites use encryption and advises looking for “https” or a lock icon in your mobile browser. Many apps also use encryption, although it is harder for users to check. FTC guidance on public Wi-Fi

Encryption protects connection contents in transit; it does not make a website trustworthy. A scam site can use HTTPS too. Nor should HTTPS be taken to mean that every network observer learns nothing: the FTC’s findings about some ISPs collecting domain information show why content privacy and metadata privacy are different questions.

Wi-Fi encryption, HTTPS, and VPNs do different jobs

| WPA3 or WPA2 Wi-Fi security | The wireless link, helping prevent nearby unauthorized users from reading network traffic. | It does not make a phone invisible to the network administrator or remove software installed on the phone. |

How to make home Wi-Fi more secure
- Check the router’s wireless security setting. Use WPA3 Personal if available, or WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer and best available encryption, while noting that both WPA3 and WPA2 scramble information. FTC home Wi-Fi security guidance
- Replace default passwords. Set a unique Wi-Fi network password and a separate, unique router administrator password.
- Update the router software. Install available updates to help address security issues.
- Turn off features you do not need. The FTC recommends disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP when they are not needed.
- Consider a guest network for visitors, so guests can use Wi-Fi without joining your main network.
- Consider replacing an outdated router if it remains limited to older WPA or WEP security and cannot support WPA2 or WPA3 after updates.
What to do on public Wi-Fi
- Use HTTPS websites and check for “https” or a lock icon in your browser.
- Keep your phone’s operating system updated.
- Use strong account passwords and turn on two-factor authentication where available.
- Remember that encryption does not prove a website is safe; check that a site is the one you intended to visit before entering sensitive information.
Would a VPN stop someone from seeing your activity?
A VPN can encrypt traffic between your phone and the VPN provider, but choosing one means trusting that provider with your traffic. It does not promise that nobody can track you, protect a phone that has monitoring software installed, or make a scam website safe. The FTC advises researching a VPN app, reviewing its permission requests, checking that it encrypts information, and finding out whether it shares data with third parties. FTC public Wi-Fi guidance
If you suspect stalkerware on your phone
Stalkerware is software installed on a phone that can monitor online activity and access personal information such as messages, location, and photos. If a partner, family member, or another person may be monitoring you, consider your safety before changing the device. The FTC warns that removing stalkerware or searching for help on a potentially monitored phone may alert an abuser. When appropriate, contact a domestic-violence advocate using a different device and make a safety plan before removing software or resetting the phone. FTC guidance on stalkerware
