They fail for different reasons. Fix a missing or stale still by checking Studio’s save state, account verification, image specifications, policy status, surface-specific display and propagation time. A missing moving preview may not be an error at all: YouTube offers previews selectively and does not guarantee one for every video longer than 30 seconds.
Use the decision path below to identify which preview is missing before changing the image, re-uploading, or waiting.
First identify which preview is failing

A custom thumbnail is a single still image. A video preview is a separate, automatic clip lasting three seconds. The motion preview does not replace your custom image, and uploading a larger still cannot force YouTube to create one.
Fix a missing or stale custom thumbnail
1. Save the image on the intended video
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content, select the exact video, and find the Thumbnail section in the video details.
- Upload the intended file or choose one of YouTube’s generated options, then select Save.
- Reopen the same video in Studio and confirm that the selected image is still shown before checking a public page.
Editing a different upload, closing the page before saving, or checking a different channel can look like a failed thumbnail update.

2. Confirm custom-thumbnail access
YouTube says custom thumbnails are available when the account is verified. Check the channel’s feature eligibility and complete verification if the Thumbnail control is unavailable. Verification is separate from video-preview eligibility: a verified channel can still have a video for which YouTube does not show a moving preview.
3. Export an image that meets YouTube’s current requirements

YouTube recommends JPG or PNG. Keep the ratio appropriate for the video type and compress the file without dropping below the minimum dimension. The 50 MB figure is a desktop Studio limit, not a universal mobile limit.
For Shorts, use the computer-based Shorts thumbnail workflow described in YouTube’s custom-thumbnail Help page; do not assume the standard-video mobile steps apply unchanged.
4. Allow propagation time without inventing a deadline
YouTube states, “It may take time for your thumbnail changes to appear on YouTube.” Its Help page does not promise a fixed number of minutes or hours. After saving, check again later and compare more than one surface. Repeatedly replacing the same file is unlikely to make an update propagate faster.

5. Check policy restrictions
Custom thumbnails can be rejected or have privileges affected when they violate Community Guidelines. If the image contains prohibited or misleading material, changing dimensions will not solve the problem. Look for a Studio notification or restriction before trying another upload.
When the image changes only on some YouTube surfaces
YouTube does not always render one thumbnail identically everywhere. For a vertical video, a 16:9 custom thumbnail can be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom image can still appear in other listed contexts, so this behavior is not necessarily a failed upload.
- Compare the video’s watch page with Home, Explore and Subscriptions.
- Check the same surface while signed in and signed out if practical; personalized feeds can show different cards.
- Record the video type (standard or Short), orientation and the exact surface before reporting a discrepancy.
Do not crop a landscape asset repeatedly just to make Home use it for a vertical video; first establish whether the difference is YouTube’s intended 4:5 presentation.
Why an automatic video preview does not appear
Eligibility is selective
YouTube says previews are available for most videos longer than 30 seconds, but not every video. Its system considers criteria including the video’s topic and content: “We use several criteria, including video topic and content, to figure out what videos can have previews.” A 31-second video therefore is not entitled to a preview merely because it crosses the duration threshold.

Check a supported surface and browser
The Help page names Home, Subscriptions, watch pages and search results as preview surfaces. It also identifies select desktop browser support, including Chrome version 32 and up and Opera version 19 and up. Browser support and interface behavior can change, so treat those versions as the current Help-page guidance and recheck the page if your browser behaves differently.
Use YouTube’s two-day rule
If no preview has appeared within two days, YouTube says, “the video isn’t currently eligible.” There is no documented switch, thumbnail size or upload trick that forces eligibility. Continue using a compliant custom still and treat the absent motion clip as an eligibility outcome rather than a broken custom-thumbnail upload.
Separate upload errors from preview eligibility
An error while sending an image is a different problem from YouTube choosing not to show a motion preview. Capture the exact wording before retrying.

Uploading thumbnails through the YouTube Data API
Use the API only when you need an automated upload workflow; it does not grant video-preview eligibility. The thumbnails.set endpoint accepts JPEG, PNG or application/octet-stream media, with a maximum upload size of 50 MB and an approximate quota cost of 50 units per call. Your request must be authorized for the channel and reference an existing video.

API failures identify a different diagnosis path from Studio failures. Check for an invalid image, a missing media body, authorization or permission errors, a video-not-found response, and an upload-rate-limit error. The API’s 50 MB maximum does not replace Studio’s mobile 2 MB video-thumbnail limit or its other device-specific limits.
After a successful API response, verify the thumbnail resource and then inspect the public surfaces. YouTube can resize or present the resource differently; the resource dimensions and behavior are documented in YouTube’s thumbnail resource reference.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Name the failure: stale still, missing still, missing motion preview or an explicit upload error.
- Check the exact video: open it in Studio, confirm the selected thumbnail and save state.
- Check access: verify the channel if custom thumbnails are unavailable.
- Check the asset: JPG/PNG, correct orientation, dimensions, ratio and the limit for the device you used.
- Check policy notices: a rejected or restricted image needs a compliant replacement.
- Check the surface: account for the 4:5 vertical-video behavior on Home, Explore and Subscriptions.
- Wait appropriately: allow unspecified propagation time for a still; use the two-day guidance for a motion preview.
- Only then retry: if the message is “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached,” wait 24 hours rather than repeatedly submitting files.
Capture the rendered page when you need to compare surfaces
If a thumbnail appears correctly in Studio but differs on a public page, a rendered capture can document exactly what a visitor sees on a particular URL. It will not create a YouTube video preview or change eligibility, but it can make a surface-specific discrepancy reproducible for your team.

- Do not enlarge an image expecting that to force a moving preview; still-image requirements and preview eligibility are separate.
- Do not treat YouTube’s 50 MB API or desktop limit as the mobile Studio limit.
- Do not promise a cache-clearing interval or an exact propagation time that YouTube does not publish.
