In Q2 2026, YouTube Live logged 12.97 billion hours watched, up 18.0% year over year, while YouTube Gaming logged 1.79 billion hours, down 18.9%. The difference is largely one of scope: live viewing includes far more than gaming.
What the growth figures show
Two measures help explain why headlines about YouTube livestream growth can coexist with reports of declining gaming viewership:
- Broad YouTube Live: Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet reported 12.97 billion hours watched in Q2 2026, an 18.0% increase year over year.
- YouTube Gaming: The same report recorded 1.79 billion hours watched, down 18.9% year over year.
The report also put YouTube Live at 60.3% of tracked total livestream hours in Q2 2026, compared with 58.8% in Q1 2026. That share refers to the platforms and measurement approach in the report, not every livestream watched worldwide. The Q2 2026 report was the first from Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet to include broad YouTube Live separately from YouTube Gaming, with historical data added for comparison. YouTube’s own audience statistic points in the same general direction, though it measures a different thing: the company said that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content on an average day in Q2 2025. This is YouTube-reported audience share, not an independent estimate of what caused viewing to rise. YouTube’s Live updates announcement says that the live audience watches everything from gameplay to Q&As.

Why people may be choosing livestreams
Live interaction creates a shared event
A livestream lets viewers participate while something is happening. Chat gives viewers a way to respond to a creator and to one another, and the creator can address comments in real time. YouTube describes that shared experience as a way to build community. The format extends beyond gaming
Gameplay is only one use for live video. YouTube lists Q&As, classes, workshops, travel, tours, food reviews and crafts among possible formats. The range gives viewers ways to follow instruction, a person, a place or an event as it unfolds—not just a game. The Q2 2026 report’s distinction between broad Live and Gaming makes this range especially important when interpreting growth.

New features aim to improve discovery and participation
YouTube has announced tools including simultaneous horizontal and vertical broadcasts with unified chat, mobile reactions to other live events or creators, and AI-generated highlights that can become Shorts. The company presents these as ways to help creators get discovered and extend engagement. The announcement does not report a measured audience lift from those features, so they are plausible parts of YouTube’s strategy rather than demonstrated causes of the growth figures.
Viewing context is expanding, but TV data is not Live data
YouTube says more than 1 billion hours of its content are watched on televisions globally each day. That figure is about YouTube overall, not livestreams specifically. It provides context for how people use the platform, but it does not show that TV viewing caused YouTube Live to grow. YouTube’s February 2024 post cites Nielsen and describes viewing across a range of programming.

How to read YouTube Live audience numbers
Growth claims are meaningful only when the metric, category and period match. YouTube distinguishes several live analytics measures:
- Concurrent viewers: How many people are watching at the same time.
- Peak concurrent viewers: The highest simultaneous audience during the stream.
- Live views: Times the stream was viewed while it was live.
- Chat rate: The rate of messages sent in live chat.
- Average view duration: Average time watched per view.
- Total watch time: The accumulated viewing time, available in post-stream analytics.
These answer different questions. A stream can have many views but a lower peak audience, or a modest number of viewers who watch for a long time. YouTube also notes that processed, despammed Analytics data can differ from figures in Live Control Room. For a meaningful comparison, keep the platform, category, timeframe and metric consistent. What the trend means for creators
The growth figures indicate that YouTube Live is a substantial viewing format, but they do not guarantee that a particular channel or stream will attract an audience. The broad category includes different subjects and viewing habits. A creator evaluating their own results should look at their stream analytics—especially concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, watch time and average view duration—rather than assuming that market-level hours translate directly into channel growth.
Creators also have options for how to produce a live stream. YouTube says creators can stream from mobile and use live chat, ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships; availability and eligibility can depend on the feature and channel.
