The most important check is how long the stream ran without being ended. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a reliable way to create one complete YouTube archive. For the next lecture, end and restart the stream in sessions comfortably under 12 hours, and record locally as a backup. If the stream was under 12 hours, compare the archive with the local recording and check encoder and network history; the available evidence cannot identify the cause of a particular partial archive.
Why a 24/7 stream may have only a partial archive
YouTube’s guidance distinguishes streams shorter than 12 hours from those that exceed 12 hours: shorter streams can be automatically archived, while longer streams may not be captured at all. That is a warning, not a guarantee that every longer stream will fail or that it will produce a partial file. The specific cause of a missing beginning or ending cannot be determined from the archive alone.
Check the actual uninterrupted start and end times of the encoder session, rather than the lecture’s scheduled hours. If the session ran over 12 hours, the duration is the first issue to investigate. YouTube does not specify an official safety buffer, so ending and restarting well before the threshold is prudent rather than a separately stated platform requirement. YouTube’s archive guidance gives the threshold and warning.
How to diagnose the missing portion
1. Compare the stream duration with the archive
- Find the stream’s actual start and end timestamps and calculate the uninterrupted session length.
- Note where the saved archive begins and ends, and identify the missing interval.
- If the session exceeded 12 hours, treat YouTube’s duration warning as a plausible explanation, not proof of exactly what happened to this stream.
2. Check the local recording
If you recorded while streaming, compare the local file’s timeline with the YouTube archive. Confirm that the file is playable and covers the missing interval. If you can inspect its history, check that its size continued growing during the period in question. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive and verifying its integrity; its streaming tips also advise checking the local archive.

- If the local file contains the missing lecture section, you have a backup copy even though the YouTube archive is incomplete.
- If the local file is also incomplete, inspect encoder status and recording storage around the gap.
- If no local recording exists, the cited guidance does not establish whether YouTube can recover the missing portion. Do not assume that a partial archive can be restored.
3. Review encoder and network events
Check encoder status and logs for stops, restarts, errors, or changes around the missing interval. In YouTube Live Control Room, review stream-health messages and preview the audio and video. YouTube cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream and recommends a reliable internet connection. These checks can help locate a problem, but without the stream’s own logs they do not prove that a network interruption caused the partial archive. See YouTube’s streaming tips and streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Plan the next lecture so the archive is protected
End long broadcasts as separate sessions
For a lecture service that must run around the clock, schedule separate encoder sessions and end each one comfortably before it reaches 12 hours. Start a new session for the next segment rather than relying on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete archive. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular restart schedule or ideal lecture length.

Record and verify a local backup
- Enable local recording in the encoder before the lecture starts.
- Choose a destination with enough available storage for the expected recording.
- Start the stream and recording, then confirm that the local file exists and its size is growing.
- After the session, play the file and check that it covers the expected start and end.
If the recording device lacks suitable space, an external SSD or hard drive can provide a destination. A drive can help preserve future recordings; it cannot recover footage that was never recorded locally.
Preview and monitor the event
Prepare and test the encoder before the lecture. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream-health messages, and audio and video during the event. YouTube recommends a reliable internet connection and monitoring the stream; these are preventive checks, not a guarantee that an archive will be complete.

Do not confuse DVR rewind with the saved archive
DVR controls whether viewers can rewind during a live stream; it is separate from the post-stream archive. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Its DVR guidance also says that when DVR is disabled, viewers can still see a recording of the entire stream once it is available. A viewer’s inability to rewind far enough during a broadcast therefore does not, by itself, explain a partial saved video.
