docker compose up does not make a changed, single-container service deploy without interruption. Compose stops and recreates the container; a healthcheck can report whether a container is healthy, but it does not keep the old instance serving traffic while the new one starts or switch requests between them. To avoid a request gap, you need overlapping instances, a readiness check, traffic handoff and connection draining—not just a Compose healthcheck.

Why a Compose redeploy can interrupt requests

When a service’s image or configuration changes, docker compose up stops and recreates its existing container. Docker’s production redeploy example likewise builds the changed service and runs docker compose up --no-deps -d web; the service is stopped, destroyed and recreated. With only one app instance, there is no old instance available to serve requests during that replacement.

This is a container lifecycle operation, not by itself a rolling deployment. The exact interruption depends on the application, proxy and request path, but a single instance has an interval in which it is unavailable. A healthcheck does not remove that interval: it reports a configured health status, rather than creating another instance or managing incoming traffic.

What healthchecks and dependency ordering actually do

A healthcheck is a signal, not a traffic switch

A Compose service healthcheck lets Docker evaluate whether a container passes the check you define. Make that check meaningful: test whether the application can serve the requests that matter, not merely whether its process exists. Even a useful check does not add the container to a proxy, remove an old backend, or drain existing connections. Those actions require routing and rollout logic.

“Started” is not the same as “ready”

Short-form depends_on controls startup order but does not make Compose wait until a dependency is ready. If a dependent service must wait for a healthy dependency, use long-form depends_on with condition: service_healthy, and define a suitable healthcheck. This controls dependency startup; it still does not orchestrate an overlapping application rollout. See Docker’s documentation on startup and shutdown order and service definitions.

Why graceful shutdown matters

Compose sends a stop signal—SIGTERM by default—and waits for the configured stop_grace_period before sending SIGKILL. Docker documents a default grace period of 10 seconds. If the application does not handle the signal and finish in-flight work within the allowed time, active requests can be cut off when the container is stopped. See Docker’s service configuration reference for stop_signal and stop_grace_period.

For graceful termination, the application should stop accepting new work and allow existing requests to finish. Set the grace period to fit the application’s actual shutdown needs. If you cannot modify the application to handle signals correctly, Docker’s Compose FAQ suggests using an init system or signal proxy.

How to deploy without a request gap

A proxy-backed rollout keeps the old instance available while a replacement starts, confirms the replacement is ready, directs new traffic to it, and gives existing connections time to drain before stopping the old instance. Each stage matters: starting a second container alone does not help if both cannot run at once or the proxy never routes to the replacement.

  1. Confirm your deployment mechanism. Check whether the deployment uses ordinary docker compose up, a separate rollout tool or Docker Swarm. Plain Compose recreation of a changed single-instance service does not document an old/new overlap.
  2. Make overlap possible. Ensure both versions can run simultaneously. Check host port bindings, shared resources and whether old and new versions remain compatible during the transition.
  3. Start and check the replacement. Use a readiness check that reflects the app’s ability to serve relevant requests. Do not send it production traffic merely because its process has started.
  4. Hand off traffic. Configure the proxy or load balancer to send new requests to the healthy replacement. Confirm that its upstream membership and health-check timing match the rollout.
  5. Drain the old instance. Stop routing new work to it, allow active requests and long-lived connections to finish, then stop it with a suitable signal and grace period.
  6. Plan for failure and rollback. Decide what happens if the replacement never becomes ready or fails after traffic moves. Do not remove the old instance until the handoff has succeeded.

The third-party docker-rollout project documents one Compose-oriented implementation of a proxy-backed replacement and traffic handoff. Its behavior is specific to that tool and setup; it is not a guarantee supplied by docker compose up.

When Docker Swarm update settings apply

Docker’s Deploy Specification describes service update and rollback settings, including update parallelism and whether replacement is start-first or stop-first. Stop-first is the default. Do not assume that fields in a Compose file automatically produce a rolling update in every environment: verify that the runtime performing the deployment consumes those settings. Swarm’s service orchestration is distinct from ordinary single-instance Compose recreation.

Compare the deployment options

Approach Overlap and traffic handoff Readiness and draining Best fit
Plain, single-instance Compose recreation The changed container is stopped and recreated; the standard command does not document old/new overlap. Healthchecks can report health but do not perform traffic cutover. A simple single-host deployment where a brief interruption is acceptable.
Compose with a proxy and rollout process or tool Can keep old and new instances present and switch traffic after the replacement passes its readiness check. Requires configured readiness, proxy membership changes and connection draining; details depend on the implementation. A single-host deployment that can run multiple compatible app instances.
Docker Swarm service update Update configuration supports parallelism and start-first or stop-first ordering; stop-first is the default. Configure monitoring, failure action and rollback behavior; readiness depends on useful health checks. A deployment using Swarm’s service orchestration and update controls.

Diagnose where requests are being lost

Trace a failing request through the full path rather than treating every outage as a container-startup problem. Check:

  • Deployment command and runtime: identify what recreates or updates the service, and whether its runtime honors the deployment settings you expect.
  • Readiness: confirm the check tests the application’s ability to serve real requests, and that traffic is not sent before it passes.
  • Proxy behavior: inspect upstream membership, health-check timing and the point at which traffic moves to the replacement.
  • Connections: account for keep-alive, long-lived requests and connection draining when removing the old backend.
  • Overlap constraints: check for host-port conflicts or other resources that prevent old and new instances from running together.
  • Version compatibility: verify that both versions can operate during the overlap, including against shared data or interfaces.
  • Shutdown: confirm the app handles its stop signal and that its work can finish within the configured grace period.

These checks depend on your proxy, application and deployment setup; there is no universal Compose setting that performs the entire handoff.
