If your YouTube radio livestream still shows offline after your encoder reconnects, first check whether YouTube is actually receiving the feed. In Live Control Room, inspect the preview, stream-health messages and stream status; then verify the encoder’s stream URL and key, connection capacity, encoding settings and any scheduled-stream controls. Reconnecting the encoder alone does not prove that YouTube has resumed receiving the intended feed, and there is no one recovery step established for every case.
What “offline” can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube distinguishes a stream configured for use from one whose data is arriving. In its API terminology, active means YouTube is receiving stream data; inactive means it is not. Health status can also report detected issues. These states help identify whether the feed is reaching YouTube, but they do not by themselves explain every viewer-facing offline message or name a universal fix. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams
The guidance here applies to encoder-based livestreams. The precise behavior may differ for a particular audio-only radio service or continuous-loop setup, depending on how it sends the broadcast. To narrow down a specific incident, you need the encoder software, the stream type, the status and health messages, whether the broadcast is scheduled, and whether data reaches YouTube after reconnecting.

- Open Live Control Room and inspect the preview. Look for incoming picture and audio rather than relying only on the encoder’s “connected” indicator. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Read the stream-health messages. Note the specific warning or error shown. Health messages can reveal detected delivery or encoding issues; record them before changing settings.
- Check whether YouTube reports incoming data. If the stream is
inactive, investigate the encoder feed and destination. If it isactive, YouTube is receiving data, so use the preview and health messages to understand why the viewer-facing page still appears offline. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams
Verify the encoder destination and stream key
Confirm the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube stream URL and using the matching stream key. The key identifies the stream to the encoder and lets YouTube accept its feed; a connected encoder can still be pointed at a different destination or using a different key than the broadcast you are checking.

Connect streaming software to go live
Check bitrate, connection capacity and encoder settings
A reconnect may restore a connection without making it reliable enough to deliver the configured stream. Compare the encoder’s upload bitrate with the upload capacity available to it, and choose a quality that the connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Its encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists supported codecs. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Use the applicable resolution, frame-rate and codec row in YouTube’s settings guidance rather than treating a bitrate figure as a measure of how often this offline symptom occurs. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations
- If upload capacity is variable or insufficient, lower the encoder’s bitrate or stream quality to a level the connection can reliably sustain.
- Check that the encoder uses CBR and that its keyframe interval follows YouTube’s recommendation.
- Test the preview and health messages after any change. A setting change is useful only if the incoming feed becomes stable and healthy.
If the broadcast is scheduled, inspect its controls
For an encoder-based scheduled stream, check whether auto-start or auto-stop is enabled and whether the encoder is still sending a feed. These settings can be copied when reusing stream settings, so verify them on the broadcast in question instead of assuming they match another event. YouTube guidance on connecting streaming software

Prepare for the next reconnect
YouTube recommends testing the preview before an event, checking backup-encoder failover, verifying that the event is accessible, and monitoring audio and video quality. Stop the encoder after YouTube ends the event. These checks can expose a destination, failover or quality problem before it affects a live broadcast. YouTube live encoder guidance
